My self-summary
Ex-academic having a ball as a fine art photographer, traveling the world, the country, the region and around the block finding beauty and occasionally the sublime—in people, rocks, ice and scrap metal, among other things. Curious about everything, iconoclast, low-key eccentric, political radical (but non-ideological! I question conventional lefty wisdom). Looking for a fellow traveler in every sense of the word. After circling the world in 2014 (visiting 12 countries, mostly in Asia), there’s still a lot of the world I want to see—with a hardy, fit, fascinated and fascinating companion. Physical as well as intellectual, I want to know your story and how you became the amazing person you are. I love expertise, believe interpretations can be endless, and am in high cotton in multi-stranded conversations.
I’m ecstatic with my new grandson and have two fabulous daughters whom I learn from unceasingly and laugh with a lot.
What I’m doing with my life
Working at my art, earning a good living as a portrait & wedding photographer, traveling as much as I can, spending time with my new grandson, trying to keep up with the art world, reading, seeing friends, not enough movies or theater.
I’m really good at
Photography, playing the piano, uncritical acceptance, listening, taking criticism, psychological understanding, personal growth and inspiring others in same, sharing what I know, travel, cooking, basic carpetry & repairs, laughter & deadpan humor.
The first things people usually notice about me
Warmth, articulateness, intelligence, that I'm ready to joke with anyone.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Novels starting with Flaubert, George Eliot, Joyce, Dostoevsky, Gore Vidal, Proust, Céline, Garcia-Marquez, Rushdie, Arundati Roy, Tom Robbins—so many and looking for more. Non-fiction: history, anthropology, economics, e.g. Michael Hudson, Jane Mayer, Jared Diamond, Kevin Phillips, Robert Fisk, David Talbot. Poets: Neruda, Rilke, Yeats, Wallace Stephens, Apollinaire. I watch a lot of documentaries, and I love serious films. Music: jazz, classical, avant-garde, folk, ethnic. Food: Ethiopian, Indian, Japanese, Middle Eastern, pan-Asian, Mexican and more. I cook a lot, always very healthy, love my Nutri-Bullet. I just read Carlo Levi's "Christ Stopped at Eboli" in Italian and fell in love with the language all over again.
Six things I could never do without
My daughters above all, and my friends. The other things that keep me happy are exercise, stimulation (intellectual, aesthetic, physical), books, and various objects, e.g. camera, computer, car, radio and iPod. Also fruit. That must be more than six.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Politics, who really runs things in this country, and how we can break through media barriers; how ridiculous the Republicans are; climate change, how to transcend myself in my art, how to improve my marketing, why it's so damned hard to find the right companion.
On a typical Friday night I am
Visiting my daughter and grandson, out with a friend, or home working.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I watch virtually no television.
You should message me if
you're articulate, iconoclastic, lefty, creative, adventurous, love travel, laugh easily, sensitive to the visual arts, and seeking someone who responds to the magnificent and complex self that you've spent a lifetime becoming.
