My self-summary
I have been in the city for close to 3 years. Love my neighborhood, have a great group of friends and I enjoy what I do. In short, things are good.

As far as work goes, I have had a number of gratifying careers. I was an English teacher in Prague and Tokyo, a marketing guru in Silicon Valley and a stand-up comic in San Francisco. I currently practice law downtown. One day, I hope to captain a vessel dedicated to underwater exploration, a la Jacques Cousteau's Calypso.
What I’m doing with my life
Doing a bit of research into nutrition for divers.

Inventing cocktails: Just made one with fresh shiso and aloe juice. Very refreshing.

What I'm not doing with my life: disengaging from in-person conversations to look at my phone.
I’m really good at
Bringing friends together to enjoy a good meal (I can make a pretty mean version of most of the things on my favorite foods list), helping people make tough decisions, picking out the perfect beer for the next round, parallel parking, identifying people from old photos, doing simple math at depths up to 140 feet, wordsmithing, writing humorous poetry, recalling snippets of conversations from years ago (amusing snippets, not "I'm locking this away in the file to use against you one day" snippets), waking up without an alarm clock (once woke up in the Lower East Side at 5:14 am and made it to Laguardia for a 6:10 am flight, even managed to get my checked bag on the plane; this was, admittedly, a bit hectic so I may consider setting an alarm in the future when circumstances require).
The first things people usually notice about me
When I wear a tuxedo, I look vaguely like Daniel Craig. When I have laryngitis, I sound vaguely like Leonard Cohen.

I'm working on lounge act to take advantage of the above.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: Wind Up Bird Chronicle, One Hundred Years of Solitude, Pale Fire, Absurdistan, Confederacy of Dunces, Embers, Catch-22, Lolita, River of Doubt, dictionaries.

Last book I read: Chronicle in Stone

What I'm reading now: Thinking Fast and Slow

Movies: Dr. Strangelove, Memento, Raising Arizona, Quiz Show, The Exorcist, Se7en, American Beauty, Whitnail and I, Airplane, The Godfather, Pulp Fiction, Annie Hall, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Manhattan, Exit Through the Gift Shop, the first Mesrine movie.

TV: Breaking Bad, Community, Game of Thrones, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Peep Show, Homeland, Frozen Planet.

Note: I seem to lack the receptor that makes people respond to Mad Men. Ditto Downton Abbey (I mean, really, a maid serving a duke?).

Food: Italian (chicken piccata and marsala), Thai (green curry, tom yam goong, spicy beef salad), Peruvian (ceviche, ceviche, ceviche), Indian, skirt steak slathered in chimichurri sauce. Basically, anything with big flavors.

Restaurants I really like: Traif, St. Anselm.

Music: Stones, Van Morrison, Janis Joplin, Velvet Underground, punk, lots of other stuff. Not so much into electronic dance music, but my friends seem to enjoy it so I deal with it.

Activities: love love love scuba diving.
Six things I could never do without
travel, books, laughter, the ocean, long sunny afternoons blending into long breezy evenings, a comfortable place to sleep off the former
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Friends and family in faraway places
Theories of humor
Good locations for a scuba diving vacation
What to read next
On a typical Friday night I am
thoroughly charming
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I own a onesie (see photo), and will occasionally wear it to the corner store.
You should message me if
You have a good sense of humor (or humour, Brits welcome) and you'd like to meet for a drink, check out a good restaurant, head off to some part of the city neither of us has never seen or do just about anything involving the ocean.
