My self-summary
I'm a passionate, quirky, kind, intellectual, literary, shy-until-you-get-to-know-me but energetic-once-I-feel-comfortable-with-you, music-loving, coffee-drinking girl newly making the Bay Area her home.
What I’m doing with my life
I teach teenagers to read and write (and think and analyze...and like books...and think about life...)
In my free time I'm an avid explorer and traveler (whenever I can, although lately I'm becoming more of a homebody), and I practice what I preach: I love reading and am currently running out of bookshelf space.
I’m really good at
Well, I'm pretty good at relocating, as I've lived in St. Louis, New York, D.C., Indianapolis, Minneapolis, and now here!
Not to brag, but I am a good singer. I like to belt one out every now and again, although I don't sing regularly anymore-- well, that is, outside of the car and the shower.
I have excellent grammar, and I know all of the words to Meatloaf's "Paradise By the Dashboard Light."
The first things people usually notice about me
I'm pretty smiley, I usually have a book or two in my purse, and I enjoy wearing vintage (or at least vintage-style) clothing.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books-- Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Jane Eyre, The Sun Also Rises, Let the Great World Spin, Special Topics in Calamity Physics, Possession, Brideshead Revisited
Movies-- Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Royal Tenenbaums, An Education, The Apartment, Midnight in Paris, The Graduate, Once, Amelie
Music-- I'm an avid listener of NPR pop culture/music podcasts, so I will listen to pretty much anything they recommend. Special favorites include Stars, A Fine Frenzy, Damien Rice, Dean & Britta, Simon & Garfunkel, The Magnetic Fields, Joni Mitchell, The Civil Wars, Rilo Kiley...and so on. I also love jazz, French ye-ye music, and rockabilly/swing.
Shows-- I take guilty pleasure in The Voice, So You Think You Can Dance, and Top Chef. I also think Parks and Rec is genius.
Food-- I love trying new types of food, so I guess I'll list what I could do without: cheeseburgers, chili, bacon, and Mexican food.
The six things I could never do without
1) my dog, Pip
2) my family
3) books
4) cultural experiences/activity
5) caffeine
6) intellectual curiosity combined with zest for life (along with time alone to think and process...I'm most definitely an introvert, so my decompression time is key)
I spend a lot of time thinking about
happiness; why movie stars from the 1950s talked with British accents; where I want to travel next; gender studies and social justice; how to become a better teacher/person.
On a typical Friday night I am
Often decompressing after a long week with a glass of wine and a movie with the dog. Or, if I've really got my act together, exploring this fine city or getting together one-on-one with a friend.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I've never seen the Star Wars films...and while I'm sure I will someday, I'm okay with that for now.
You should message me if
you're interested in getting together for coffee; you know that "supposably" is not a word; you don't mind movies in black and white; you like exploring; you're looking for a sassy girl with equal amounts of 1920s, 1950s, and 1990s in her; you share my hatred of mean people.
