My self-summary
I strike a good balance these days. I work in the San Francisco financial district but I live with a great group of housemates in a house near Lake Merritt with a cherry tree in the back yard, a crazy '60's intercom system, and Molly, the sad Basset. I work out on my lunch hour and in the evenings I fix something healthy and put on a little comfort TV (often Northern Exposure), or, if it's warm out, read with the window open. My real energy and passion go into a film talk show on KALX Berkeley, for which I review films and interview filmmakers from all over the world, which is a great challenge, and a thrill. I'm interested in meeting anyone who is smart and fun, with adventurous tastes, but it would be especially cool to meet someone who likes to think and talk about storytelling (in any form - film, comics, photography, jazz ballads, or good old-fashioned prose fiction) as much as I do.
What I’m doing with my life
I work at an architecture firm and contribute to a radio show about film. Aside from that, I like exploring new neighborhoods and finding new places to eat by saving the restaurant reviews from the East Bay Express - the more mom and pop and hole-in-the-wall, the better. I also like seeing live jazz at all the great venues in the Bay Area, from Healdsburg down to Stanford and Santa Cruz. When I feel like traveling farther than that, I'm lucky to have friends and family up in Portland and down in LA, and I make it a point to go back East once a year: to Burlington, Vermont (to visit friends from my New England years), and to New York (to visit New York).
I’m really good at
Making a killer, heaping omelette and a strong pot of coffee on Sunday mornings.
The first things people usually notice about me
Probably the light beard and what I hope is a warm, easy-going grin.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
My favorite writers, poets, and cartoonists include: Philip K. Dick, Richard Ford, Graham Greene, Denis Johnson, Flannery O'Connor, Charles Willeford, Richard Hugo, Robert Frost, Dan Clowes, Adrian Tomine, Los Bros. Hernandez, Chris Ware, and Carol Swain

Movies: Blade Runner, In a Lonely Place, Fat City, Point Break, Rushmore, Groundhog Day, The Red Shoes, Sullivan's Travels, Stranger Than Paradise, The New World, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia

Music: Elvis Costello, The Velvet Underground, Galaxie 500, Paul Simon, Lester Young, Bill Evans, Beach House, Recondite, Shigeto, Deerhunter, Karen Dalton, Neil Young, Brian Eno, Joy Division, New Order, Junior Boys, Cat Power, Neko Case, Tears For Fears (Songs From the Big Chair!)

Shows: Louie, Girls, The Mindy Project, and Mad Men; Northern Exposure and Freaks and Geeks are on a continuous loop in the background of my life

Food: toasted subs, tacos al pastor, a well-seasoned omelette (fashioned by yours truly, natch)
Six things I could never do without
B&W films, coffee, avocados, used book stores, jazz records (and radio), Bowie
I spend a lot of time thinking about
My days as a champion hot dog-eater back in Boston. OK, it was just one day, actually, when a group of us from work undertook the 90-minute challenge at Spike's Junkyard Dogs in Allston together, but I came out on top with eight polish sausage-sized dogs consumed, buns and all, and I still take pride that a Polaroid of my (very queasy) mug adorns the winner's wall there.
On a typical Friday night I am
Generally relaxing with sad jazz records and perhaps a Simpler Times or two (both of which make me happy) so that I can wake up early and be productive on Saturday (which also makes me happy). Saturday night might be more adventurous: a live show or seeking out some far-flung burrito place.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Paul Simon's Graceland was probably the first album I ever considered my favorite, and although I like to think that my tastes have grown more varied and sophisticated over the years...I think it might still be my favorite album, if I'm honest.
You should message me if
You are genuine, creative, intelligent, willing to indulge my lengthy - but entertaining! - enthusing over cool old things, and might want to be partners in some creative endeavor - or support each other in pursuing our own.
