My self-summary
I am an interesting all-around person. I'm pretty well informed in a wide variety of areas and I'd like to think I'm a good person to talk to and hold a conversation with.

I am well-spoken, interesting, and fun
What I’m doing with my life
I am currently working as a children's librarian, though I also do a little tour guiding and substitute teaching as well. I have very interesting stories from all my jobs. I'm also good at telling those interesting stories. I am a tour guide and storyteller, after all (yes, one of the aspects of my job involves dramatically reading picture books to preschoolers).
I’m really good at
I know a good deal about a variety of subjects, but without being a know-it-all bore. I'm reasonably good at music, though I'm far from a professional musician. I know a good bit about Philadelphia through tour guiding. And I'd like to think I'm a good substitute teacher and librarian. I have a dry, occasionally mordant, though not terribly sarcastic or mean sense of humor.
The first things people usually notice about me
My eyes are lively. I can be either shy or talkative, depending on the circumstances. Though, on a first date, you'll notice I'm usually pretty restrained, since I don't want to give dates the impression that I'm always "on."
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I love biographies of interesting people, both contemporary and from history. I like non-fiction, mostly about history or politics. I also enjoy fantasy novels, though only quality ones. I'm not a fan of hack literature or anything trite. Usually. My favorite authors at the moment are Mark Twain, Sherman Alexie, Robert Jordan, George R.R. Martin, and quite a few others. I realize that most of my favorite authors are written by males and I'm trying to get over that and diversify. I have very broad tastes in food. I love cooking and I lean towards veganism, though I still eat birds and eggs. I don't eat dairy or red meat. I love Moroccan, Mexican, Thai, Chinese, Italian, Eastern European Jewish food, Burmese, Ethiopian, and any number of other cuisines. For movies, I love highbrow comedies and also really stupid comedies, particularly comedies that work on two levels, both moronic and intelligent (such as Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure). I also enjoy sci-fi, interesting drama, historical movies, and intelligent action/horror movies like Aliens. For music, I love pretty much anything that isn't boring. I also think the Bechdel Rule is worth thinking about, though a lot of my favorite movies don't meet that rule. Unfortunately, most of what I like isn't played on the radio very often. I like metal, classic rock, rap, bluegrass, old country, alternative country, punk, and folk.

I am not a big fan of TV, but I like watching old episodes of Buffy and Firefly on DVD. I occasionally watch Big Eddie and Rachel on MSNBC.

For music, some of my favorite bands/artists include: Metallica, Orphaned Land, Queen, Heart, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Pearl Jam, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Judas Priest, Bon Jovi (without a trace of irony), L7, the Ramones, Smashing Pumpkins, Dark Tranquillity, Wu-Tang Clan, Public Enemy, Pete Seeger, Dar Williams, Ani DiFranco, Rage Against the Machine, etc.
Six things I could never do without
Interesting things to read
Good music (kind of cliche, but it's true)
Sadly, my internet connection
Good hiking
Food from Asia
Probably something else that I'm not remembering now
I spend a lot of time thinking about
A variety of issues, both cosmic and mundane. Issues like social justice and peace, politics, religion, sex, you know, all the things you're not supposed to talk about. That said, I'm not remotely preachy about my views.
On a typical Friday night I am
Doing a variety of things. I might be hanging out with friends, having a beer (but rarely more than two; I'm not a big drinker) and discussing everything from philosophy to politics to religion to popular culture. I might be at a show in Philly or just staying in to listen to music and cook good food.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Well, I suppose you'll just have to find that out, won't you?
You should message me if
You are an interesting woman with a lot to bring to the table. If you are a feminist, you probably rock. I don't really care how well educated you are, so long as you're intellectually curious and open-minded. If you think Ronald Reagan or George W. Bush were great Presidents, or that Jews are all going to hell unless we accept Jesus, or you hate immigrants, LGBT people, or racial minorities, you probably will not enjoy a date with me. I definitely don't need someone to agree with me on every single issue, but compatibility on basic values is very important.

Also, don't be scared of the fact that I live in New Jersey. Collingswood is EXTREMELY close to Center City (in fact, it's closer than some of Philly's more outlying neighborhoods) and the Speedline trains come frequently. Plus, Collingswood is a pretty happening town itself. There is not a single strip mall or gated community to be found here. It's really quite civilized.
