My self-summary
Curious mind, restless hands, generous heart. Engaged and engaging, a lifelong learner, left-leaning nature lover, a surprising blend of educated and earthy, and various other paradoxes. I love back roads, the quirky, the out of the way. Many interests keep me alert and active: Take me to the opera or take me canoeing, I enjoy both, and many varied indoor and outdoor activities, as well. Endowed with a bit of a creative streak, I put it to use in my work, in the studio, the garden, the kitchen and a number of volunteer activities. Have a social conscience and hope to leave the world slightly improved.

Find intelligence, humor and wit great aphrodisiacs, as well as kindness, honesty, generosity and integrity. Enjoy a man in whom the boy still dwells. Straightforward, loyal, considerate and affectionate. Seeking my complement. Could it be you?
What I’m doing with my life
Retired from teaching, and a chef in a former life, I'm never bored, and am busy writing the next chapter. Currently studying Italian, ; serving on the board of an award-winning, not-for-profit, job training and placement organization/social enterprise, donating my time and skills as a pro bono interpreter for victims of torture; participating in my community's organic vegetable gardens. Walking and engaging with my little dog, Marigold, I'm pleased to be busier than I ever thought I'd be in retirement, but still manage to travel, entertain, and bask in the sunshine of many friendships.
I’m really good at
Compromise, telling jokes, making friends, speaking French, cooking, gardening, conversing on many and varied topics.
The first things people usually notice about me
is my smile, intelligence, and friendly nature.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Current favorite books include The Yiddish Policemen's Union, Disobedience, Snow Falling on Cedars, and I greatly admire the writing of Joan Didion, Calvin Trillin, Jane Hamilton, to name just a few. Movies? Among others: On the Waterfront, Jean de Florette, La Gloire de Mon Père, Of Gods and Men.

As for music, my personal movie has an ecclectic soundtrack - classical, opera, jazz, world, r&b - from Brahms to the Beatles, and many stops in between.

Food - there's little I don't like, but a lot I avoid, particularly fried and fast foods. Fish and seafood often find their way to my table, as do seasonal fruits, vegetables, and international fare. My dinner plate tends to be quite colorful. I can easily live without meat but indulge occasionally. A great French cheese, a good glass of red, and a fine baguette, oh la la! Some like it hot - I certainly do, and enjoy highly seasoned dishes. I could surely expound on this subject but will spare you for the moment.
Six things I could never do without
Dark chocolate and dark-roasted coffee.
How awful to lose one's sight, hearing, or sense of taste.
The oxygen of friendships. Great art. Sorry, that's seven.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
the state of the world, what to do with the rest of my life, what to make for dinner tonight.
On a typical Friday night I am
happy to be with friends, at the opera, out for a stroll, or at a movie. There is no one typical Friday night.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Oh, gee. What would you think if I told you I love to play pinball? Or that I think that the accordion is a highly underrated instrument? Or that I play the ukulele? Anything more personal than that will have to wait 'til later.
You should message me if
you're attracted to women of substance, have a well-developed sense of humor, are of a progressive bent, are fond of dogs, and are not a picky eater.
