My self-summary
I'm passionate, intense, smart, and the greatest listener you'll ever meet. I can laugh at just about anything under just about any circumstances. I like things that don't usually go together: left-wing politics and esoteric healing, Virginia Woolf and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Brechtian theater and tournament poker.
What I’m doing with my life
I feel a strong sense of mission about the artistic work I do, especially the nov!el I'm writing (I published one a few years ago with Farrar, Straus, Giroux and this is sort of a sequel)...It's an enormous epic written as a mystery about a white psychic living in present-day NY who has visions of U.S. slavery and has to figure out what they have to do with him. You don't have to believe in psychic stuff to appreciate it. A while ago I founded a theater company that is sort of on hiatus, but I'd like to revive it. For money, I'm a freelance writer. I'm also fascinated by tournament poker and play sort of seriously--it's actually quite good for my writing, and not just because I now write for a poker magazine and started a blog about poker and writing!
I’m really good at
1. Writing.
2. Listening.
3. Conversation.
4. Grasping new ideas.
5. Seeing to the heart of things.
The first things people usually notice about me
People whom I've never met are always telling me their stories, asking me for directions, or doing me incredible favors that I might or might not even have asked for (like letting me go ahead of them in line because I seem in a hurry, or bringing me free food in a restaurant because...?)...So people must notice some kind of openness or connectedness or kindness or...?

People often tell me they notice my energy, my enthusiasm, my joy, and my smile. Even when I think I'm not in a good mood, they comment on how happy I seem just to be exactly where I am. So I must be doing something right!
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Favorite writers and filmmakers: Bertolt Brecht, Anton Chekhov, Langston Hughes, Virginia Woolf, Jean Renoir, Robert Altman.

But wait! I also love detective fiction (S.J. Rozan, Lia Matera, Sara Paretsky, Minette Walters--yes, I'm especially a sucker for female detectives with complicated personal lives, or male detectives with ditto)...And I once was a huge Judith Krantz fan, so I have my trashy side.

That side comes out in TV watching, too. If you hate TV, no worries. We can enjoy high, serious, or experimental culture together. I used to have my own political and poetic theater company, which I'm still hoping to revive, and I am delighted to go to the opera, great films, theater of all types, concerts and music of all types...But if you do like TV, MAYBE we can watch together. I love a range of sitcoms (30Rock and Big Bang Theory are current favorites), chick-flick dramedies (yes, Gray's Anatomy, I won't try to hide it), and a bunch of other stuff.

As far as music and sports, if you're into either, educate me! I used to play piano and violin, and I know a lot about some kinds of music, almost nothing about others, DELIGHTED to learn. DITTO SPORTS--I used to have a boyfriend who loved basketball, and I was a fan for a year after we broke up, but couldn't sustain it on my own. I've always missed knowing that part of life--especially now that I'm often at a poker table, where everyone is talking about it!--and I'd be thrilled to be initiated...That's NOT one more woman saying she likes sports and lying about it; I'm just saying I'd like to learn. :)

Food? Eclectic and enthusiastic. But that's also a pleasure we can enjoy either together or separately...
Six things I could never do without
1. Books
2. Stuff to write with
3. Humor
4. People I love whom I can talk to--about ideas, emotions, politics, art, gossip, daily trivia, life's big issues...
5. Taking myself out to a restaurant or a cafe with a good book and maybe a notebook, and just doing nothing for several hours...
6. A sense of mission
I spend a lot of time thinking about
justice, what things really mean, what's going on with the people I care about, how to finish my novel, how to revive my life in theater, how the planet could be a better place...

Also where to take the perfect lunch or dinner break from my free-lance work at home, with outdoor seating & delicious food...

If there's a partner in my life, I spend a lot of time thinking about nice things to do for him, which sounds incredibly sappy and self-serving to say on this site, but it's true. :)
You should message me if
you'd like to get to know someone new who could potentially be a great person in your life. To me, these sites are for meeting people, so I'm into getting off the electronics and onto the in-person as quickly as possible. I'm a writer--I can be great on email, and maybe you can, too, and maybe you can't--but it's only when we're face to face that we can find out anything important about how we get along and whether we like each other enough to meet for a second time...
