My self-summary
I'm an academic. That's pretty central to who I am, and my goals are mostly oriented towards producing and spreading knowledge.

I am half Anglo-Canadian and half Jewish. I grew up in Vancouver which culturally isn't really a part of Canada, but I still very much consider myself to be culturally Canadian.

I aspire to be virtuous in the classical sense. I take a very down to earth, simple, and old approach to the good. I used to be super hard core progressive atheist, but you can probably tell from my profile that I am somewhere beyond that now.
What I’m doing with my life
Academia for now. I am study math and also a little bit of philosophy. I am starting my masters in computer science this fall in how we can use computers to make sure our mathematical proofs are correct, and how we can found mathematics on these sorts of computational systems.
I’m really good at
Spinning pens.
Imitating chickadees.
Taking jokes completely seriously and explaining why they are wrong.
Making dry personal summaries.
Dry self-referential and self-deprecating humour.
The first things people usually notice about me
My left eye. That's usually where you look first when you look at someone. It is also fairly big for an eye, but don't worry, so is the right one. It balances out.

I will probably dump at least one of my ideas on you if you talk to me for more than five minutes. I love talking about what I think about.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I think that mackerel is the best food. I also really like butter chicken, steak, sushi, and saurkraut but that is more of a subjective preference.

I think a lot of modern western media doesn't represent virtuous people and good things. That why I tend to like anime a lot more. Instead of senseless violence, or morally grey characters because apparently that's realistic and stories are supposed to be realistic, anime tends to explore good things and celebrate virtues like courage and friendship and becoming great. I like things like Madoka Magica and Full Metal Alchemist.

My favourite books are math books and philosophy books. At least, those are the sorts that I own. Logic, category theory, phenomenology. I also have a little bit of sci-fi/fantasy like Starship Troopers and HP Lovecraft.

For music, I listen to classical; I like the romantics, impressionists, and classics the most. Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Debussy, Brahms. I also listen to some modern electronic music. Usually things without lyrics because I find them distracting and usually not very meaningful or nice. Emancipator, Nujabes, Autechre.

I also play video games sometimes. I used to want to be a game designer. I play adventure and rpg games mostly. I also like watching competitive video games. Diablo 2, Ocarina of Time, Myst; watching LoL and Melee.
Six things I could never do without
Intellectual peers
Physical contact with people
Slow cookers
Comfy beds

I spend a lot of time thinking about
What is math and why is it useful?
What is most metaphysically fundamental?
What effect do philosophies like materialism have on how we see the world?
What does a mindset look like that is consistent with the findings of science but still admits most religious belief?
Considering arithmetic as a (possibly) total functional programming language, what implications do Godel's incompleteness theorems have on the pragmatics of using this language?
How do we ensure that artificial intelligence does what we intend for it to do?
Why does beauty seem to be a very good heuristic for what is good?
Which of the above questions should I be focusing on?
On a typical Friday night I am
At home, relaxing. Browsing the web, thinking, writing, chatting with friends.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Probably some of my weirder ideas above.
You should message me if
I am looking for someone who is roughly like me. In particular, what I find important is someone who wants to become good, and does so in a deliberate and reflective manner; someone who applies this mindset to social situations, rather than always going with the flow (though going with the flow is usually the thing to do). I also want someone who is physically affectionate.

Message me if you think we could get along.

Otherwise, you can try messaging me with some idea that you think is important, but that not many people believe.

Alternatively, try answering this problem: Omega, the perfect predictor comes to you and puts before you two boxes, box A and box B. You have two choices. Either take just box A, or take both boxes. There is always $1k under box B. There is $1m under box A only if Omega predicts that you take only box A. What do you do? What if box A is made of glass?

Congratulations and thank you for making it all the way here.
