My self-summary
I am an amateur-turning-professional fiction writer with a beard. It's more or less compulsory to have one if you work in the industry, I think. That and a leather jacket. I do keep it trimmed short, though. The beard, not the leather jacket. The leather jacket stays the same length all by itself.

I'm pretty geeknerdy, besides being one semi-professionally, but not in the antisocial way. I read (some) comic books (the good ones, I swear), I have a great love for animation, and roleplaying gamer (the tabletop pen & paper kind). While I suck really bad at pretty much every videogame ever made, I still like playing them as well, every now and again. Just don't expect me to win a lot. In fact, play me if you'd like to win.

But before we get too stereotypical, I also cook, and watch baseball. Not usually at the same time, though. It's distracting. Especially since baseball's way better when you attend a live game, and they don't let you cook in the stands. Usually, anyway.

I'm an optimist in a pessimist's body, who can sometimes care about all kinds of things slightly more than is strictly necessary. I'd like to think that my best quality is simply that I'm a decent human being. Second place would probably be my eyebrows. I think I've got nice eyebrows. However, you don't get as much kudos for having nice eyebrows as you do for being a decent human being.
What I’m doing with my life
I like being creative, and I'm reasonably good at it, so I've decided that I'm going to spend my life being creative and (hopefully) getting paid for it. I want to write stories of all kinds: books, television shows, movies, games, the whole works. I've had a bit of a rough start getting into it, but I'm just about finding my rhythm now.

I'm starting with games (of the pen and paper kind, like Dungeons & Dragons) and books, mainly because those are a little easier to start with compared to movies and TV shows. I've decided that I'm going to start with a short novel, which I should hopefully have finished and published before the year is out.
Update: I did it, it got published, and people even bought it for real money. I'm legitimate!

I feel that writing stories, despite what some people may say about the arts, is a noble goal for me to undertake. I mean, I'd be doing it anyway, probably, if only because it's what I'm best at, but stories are important. A truly good story can change a life, a viewpoint, can heal wounds, can shape the future. Words and ideas are not easily forgotten when they are captured on the page.

I have visited three US states (twice that, if you count layovers during flights) and I hope to travel much more over the next few years. Last year I visited Iceland! It's really nice there, I might consider going again.

What I am not doing with my life is answering any more damned questions on this site. I have hit 2000, I am happy with that amount. That's more questions about personal things than anyone should ever have to answer.
I’m really good at
Writing, maybe? Honestly these days I'm not sure I'm really good at anything. Better than average, perhaps, but it's hard to say I'm excellent at anything I can think of.

Except for chicken soup. I make some amazing chicken soup. Seriously, it is delicious. Also my vegetable soup has been lauded, although honestly that just tends to be chicken soup with extra vegetables and an absence of chicken.

Some people have told me I'm good at being a friend. Maybe I am! You may have to endure this friendship nonsense to truly find out.
The first things people usually notice about me
Well, I'd like to say my eyebrows (I really do think they're my best feature) but it probably isn't that. I'd say that, usually, it's either my size (I am sturdy, like a lobster) or my accent (if they're not from the UK, of course). Or they're wondering if I've shaved at all in the past week (50/50 chance).

Whole different situation if it's first online impressions, of course. In that case it's usually someone asking me about my username. I pick weird usernames. Some of them are hard to spell, too.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I don't really have any specific favourites when it comes to books. I especially like the works of Terry Pratchett, Neal Stephenson and Charles Stross, but I'll generally give anything a go. For five or six sentences, at least.

I like animation and action when it comes to movies. My favourites are Pixar, Harryhausen (rest in peace) and anything remotely pulp. That includes Indiana Jones and The Mummy. Creature features like Jurassic Park and Tremors get a thumbs up from me, too. Superhero films are also good, although I'm more of a Marvel fan. I suppose mainly because I like teams better than individuals, and Marvel has all the best teams. Also been getting more interested in Westerns as of late, not sure why.

Music isn't something I really pay much attention to. For me, it's there to be on in the background while I do other things. I've never been to any concerts or gigs... although I suppose I might like to. Classic rock, electronica, hip-hop, dark ambient, country, ska, heavy metal, filmscore... genres do little for me, I seriously just listen to what I like. So I don't particularly like it when people judge others by their musical choices. It seems kind of petty.

Favourite foods? Anything I can cook myself. I make a decent spaghetti bolognese, among other things. I like red meat and simple stuff, like a good steak, or fish and chips. I'm not a big fan of Chinese food (or spicy food, for different reasons, those reasons being I have a low tolerance for spiciness), but I promise I'll give anything a go at least once, twice if I'm dumb enough.
Six things I could never do without
Family, a good night's sleep, a pair of scissors, a keyboard, lava lamps, and an audience.

Although this list is liable to change at a moment's notice.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
All those stories I write. Dragons and rayguns and robots and wizards - sometimes all in the same place. I'm constantly dreaming things up or working things out. There's no better workspace than the inside of your own head. Half the problem is actually remembering to write it all down.

It's not weirdness and other worlds all the time, though. Truth be told, I also think about reality, like my future, social issues, what to have for breakfast... you know, the important stuff.

Sometimes I spend more time than I should worrying. I'm a bit of a worrier. Although it's not full-on panic or anything, more a kind of mild concern.
On a typical Friday night I am
Working freelance from home, typically. I get to set my own time to kick back and relax, so I'm not always desperately looking forward to the weekend. There are times when I'll make an exception and chill out for the night with a good movie (or two). Sometimes at the cinema, sometimes on the sofa.

I will go out to do other things, all week round in fact, but only really when I have a reason to go out. I just don't really go out just so I can go out.

However if someone is all "dude let's go out" then I don't have much reason to say no. Indeed, dude, let us go out and partake in copious amounts of "the fun".
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I suffer from depression. It comes and goes, as these things do. Sometimes I'll be fine, and then other times I'll be suffering quite badly. It's wrecked quite a few friendships and relationships early on, with people who didn't know how to deal with it - or just didn't want to.

It's not as bad as it once was, however. You certainly wouldn't be able to easily tell, if I hadn't just told you.

An admission on a less serious note: in the movie of my life, I want the role of me to be played by Nicolas Cage. In fact I would love for every role to be played by Nicolas Cage. We have the technology.
You should message me if
your initiative roll beats mine, or you think I'm a total cutie patootie, or you want to hear about my crazy projects, or if you think I'm neat and deserve a message! Even if it's just "whatup", I'm always happy to get a message.

I am also up for sharing my Skype, Steam, Google Talk, or Facebook on request! Let's be online pals, friend!
