In a universe tending towards a chaotic uniformity I am an island of ordered complexity, a bastion against entropy though as a part of the system I increase it. I am a machine made of flesh driven by electrochemical will. I am an infinitesimally small bundle of material capable of creating a structure inside itself that reflects an understanding of the workings of my environment. I am how the universe comes to know itself. I am energy coalesced into matter created by nuclear fusion in the heart of at least two stars, that died in fiery conflagration and spread that matter over lightyears thus enabling me to sit here, now, and reflect on this. I am the culmination of my life, of the lives of my millions of ancestors and every thought, feeling, action and event that has come before this moment. And so are you.
There is nothing more beautiful and majestic than these simple scientific truths.
Every time I hear the words 'Humans are the only species that...' I know what will follow will be blatantly untrue. Kill for sport? Sex for fun? Dont reach an equilibrium with their enviroment? Take care of young not genetically their own? There is always another species that does it! Here, just to prove myself wrong: Humans are the only species that build rocketships. Now THAT is true.
At the moment, I am studying Geography and History and Philosophy of Science as a part of a BA at Melbourne University. I also make an open source computer game called Zero-k (zero-k.info).
B) The typicals: Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Fight Club, Amelie. Titanic was terrible. It's like a 14 year old girl learnt about the titanic in her history class and decided to write a fanfic about it.
C) Chairlift, Bat For Lashes, The Knife, Band of Horses, My Brightest Diamond, Captain, The Decemberists, Feist, Stars, Charlemagne (The band and the historical figure), Frou Frou, Kings of Convenience, Beirut, Mirah, Modest Mouse.
D) Almost everything I eat is cooked from fresh ingredients. Cooking isn't hard and there is a simple pleasure to it. The eating is the best part though.
Intellect excites me. So does creativity.
The evolution of ideas within our culture FASCINATES me. Where things come from and where they go, cultural misappropriation, emergent tribalism and all the funny and totally arbitrary distinctions people make between one another, how this relates to identity. The root of social ideas, their context.
The whole body of science, religion, art, history. It's all intensely interesting, in one way or another.
Bonus points if you understood all the jokes.
It is also fairly important that you do not have a problem with the fact I am in a relationship with ruffianly. She is very cool and you will probably like her anyway.
