My self-summary
I suppose I’m a nerd; I do not use the word as a pejorative. I love science, logic, and reason. I am a skeptic and proud of it. I love learning new things, and try to push myself intellectually. Politically I am a liberal with strong humanist leanings. I do not suffer racists or religious zealots. And yes, I am an atheist.

I am an avid bicyclist. I like challenging myself with long rides, or at least short, difficult ones. I am reasonably fit, and expect to be fitter as bicycling season kicks in.

I’m also a bibliophile, and a middle manager in one of the best bookstores on the planet. Depending on your perspective this is a very good place or a very bad place for a bibliophile to work.

I like to cook, and enjoy an occasional glass of wine. I am a lightweight when it comes to drinking, so I never over do it.

Humor is extremely important to me. I love clever quips, and friendly sarcasm. I try to give as good as I get, and I frequently succeed. Timing is everything, I guess.

One of my biggest regrets is that I never had children. I think I would have been a pretty good dad.

I write fiction of all kinds, and had one short story (that I co-wrote with a dear friend) published a couple of years ago in a small press anthology. I keep on plugging away, and maybe some day I’ll sell another story.

Nothing is more important to me then my friends. I would pretty much do anything for them. I am loyal and compassionate and honest; at least this is what I’ve been told. Perhaps the tellers were being hyperbolic. Who can say? I’m not a boy scout though. I firmly believe that some rules and social conventions are meant to be broken. I don’t wear goodie two-shoes. I wear boots.
The first things people usually notice about me
is that I'm not dead yet, and that I'm kind, generous, and a bit shy.

To Kill A Mockingbird, The Phantom Tollbooth, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, Time Cat, The Master and Margarits, The Witches (The BFG is good too), Pale Fire, Game of Thrones, everything by Jack Vance, The Wasp Factory, Hyperion, Moby Dick, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, Beowulf (Seamus Heaney), The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Christian Science (Mark Twain), Titus Groan, On The Origin of Species, The Riverside Shakespeare, Catch-22 (That’s some catch, that Catch-22), 2666, All The Names, Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon, The Gospel According To Jesus Christ, Cat’s Cradle, The Terror, The Structure of Evolutionary Science, Love & Rockets…

All Kubrick, Donnie Darko, Pulp Fiction, City of Lost Children, Good Fellas, The Meaning of Life, The Godfather, Best in Show, Barton Fink, The Big Lebowski, A Serious Man, Time Bandits...

I love Mexican food, the hotter the better, Greek, Chinese, Italian, comfort food (biscuit and gravy), all seafood, leafy green vegetables. I'll eat anything that's put in front of me except tree nuts, which are not my friend.

My musical tastes are eclectic. Miles Davis, Solas, Billie Holliday, The Cure, Captain Beefheart, Zappa, Charlie Mingus, Carla Bley, Karsh Kale, Cannonball Adderley, Philip Glass, Bartok, Howlin’ Wolf, Pearl Jam, Black Flag, Death Cab for Cutie, The Dead Kennedys…I could go on and on.
Six things I could never do without
My touring bike
My mountain bike
Experimental jazz
My fishing pole
I spend a lot of time thinking about
The stories I'm working on.
On a typical Friday night I am
Reading or writing or taking long walks.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I've been touched by the noodly appendage of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
