My self-summary two of my friends took one of my photos off Facebook and started this site as me. They thought it would be a good idea, I'm wasn't so sure, but it seems to be working...
I'm a British artist and academic, i've lived in Pittsburgh since 2000 and come from London. My kids are the center of my life, though I only get half of my time with them-feast or famine. Much as I love my family they are thousands of miles away, so my friends are (as they always were) the glue that holds my scattered lifestyle together. Maybe you can join them, or be rather more...?
What I’m doing with my life
Being an art prof, starting an arts non-profit that exhibits contemporary art and of course nurturing my boys-or is it the other way around?
I’m really good at
Running (occasional 5K), fly fishing. I like to think I'm quite witty and a decent dancer. If you put me on the spot I would say I think I'm an excellent artist and the way my former students keep in touch, encourages me me to think that I really might be as good a prof as I think I am...
Throwing parties and cooking a few things rather well-my boys may disagree...they only remember the pizza anyway.
The first things people usually notice about me
probably my English accent
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
too many to mention, also a magazine junkie, Vanity Fair, Dwell, Monocle and NY Times, English newspapers if I can ever get hold of them, on and on...
Love movies of all kinds, Ford, Kubrick, Herzog, Woody Allen, Hitchcock, Lean, Tarrantino, early Bond movies. Music: old musicals my Fair Lady, etc.
Shins, Pixies, Jimmy Smith, Bowie, Punk stuff, even some metal, Frank Zappa, Stones, Doors, Hendrix, Dinah Washington, Black Keys, Jam, XTC, Beefheart, Keith Jarrett, Sinatra...ah Sinatra! Gershwin, Satie, Dvorak, Debussy, Rogers and Hammerstein, Puccini, Bizet, Miles Davis. All over the place in other words and I'm not expert at any of it and I never have a decent sound system.
Six things I could never do without
love, friendship-oops same thing, sun, passion, travel, the desire to be less ordinary, the arts, the urge to teach, a healthy scepticism, a disregard for authority-hence more than six, the need to keep achieving, sleep, water, soccer, oxygen, Dr. Bronner's soap (new one), NPR, BBC website, wine, great food, swimming (though I hardly ever go), hot showers, running, crappy TV shows (think Bravo), potatoes, rice, rice milk, movies, exhibitions, curating, fishing (sorry, rarely get to go!) silly lists and of course my boys
I spend a lot of time thinking about
why I'm not doing more, on almost every level
how lucky I am
the next party/dinner party at my place
whether to get a dog or not
how I can travel to London or New York
how I can get filthy rich
why 'liberal' is a dirty word in this country and a compliment in Britain
what to have for breakfast
whether I'm really allergic to gluten, or if it's just all my imagination
women, oh dear
why I'm not painting instead of being on this laptop
On a typical Friday night I am
either chill night with the boys, easy meal, or at an art opening-but I'm always open to suggestions
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I would find it difficult to date someone who votes Republican, although I do have one or two misguided friends who can't help themselves
The two of us
