My self-summary
Hello! I'm a cheerful geek with a sense of humor and at least 4 hats.

I do have a girlfriend, and yes, she does know I'm on this site. :-)
What I’m doing with my life
I'm trying to achieve the right balance of minimalism (focus on what matters!) and maximalism (do all the things!) For example: I'm trying to do a really excellent job as a computer programmer while still making space for the ridiculous and sublime.
I’m really good at
Well, I wouldn't say I'm "good at" bass guitar yet, but I'm trying!

I'd also like to think I have a gift for metaphors and analogies. In high school, I put that gift to use writing angsty poetry. Now that I'm no longer angsty, it's a talent in search of an application.
The first things people usually notice about me
...is that I'm unusually well-dressed for a computer programmer. Admittedly, this is like being the fastest sloth in the jungle.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Oh, I can (and will) go on and on about music! As I type this, I'm listening to Justice (French techno), and I couldn't live without Depeche Mode or Nine Inch Nails. And Aesop Rock and El-P and, uh, sea shanties. (Long story!)

For movies, I'm an omnivore. Halloween just passed, and I'm still on a bit of a horror kick. Last night was the original Night of the Living Dead, vastly improved by the Rifftrax guys.

TV shows? --I'm going through Rome right now, and when I need a break from the pathos, Futurama and Monty Python.
The six things I could never do without
1. York peppermint patties
2. My friends, here and around the world
3. Strongbow cider
4. Blue skies (for cheer) and gray skies (for mood)
5. Rookworst and andijve-stamppot (ik ben goed ingeburgerd)
6. My girlfriend (see "my self-summary", above)
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Urbanism, the Dutch social model, American politics, music of all stripes, and whether Heineken is overrated, underrated, or exactly-right-rated.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Well, the fact that I'm in an open relationship (non-monogamy, poly, whatever) is already a private thing that I'm admitting! ;-)
You should message me if
... you're reading this and wondering, "should I message him?" A few years ago I decided that, when in doubt, I should say "yes," and it's worked out very well for me. (It's why I'm in Amsterdam in the first place!) I'd recommend you do the same!
