My self-summary
I am a former academic (English Literature) now working on a novel. I really enjoy hearing live music, seeing films and plays, and trying out new recipes on friends.
What I’m doing with my life
Writing a novel, doing historical research, spending time with family, and fixing up my old house.
I’m really good at
Making conversation, cooking, throwing a dinner party, amusing myself and others, dancing, not being self-conscious, teaching, writing, research, listening without needing to judge others, not stereotyping people, being polite and considerate, standing up to bullies, being kind, and being open to new ideas and experiences.
The first things people usually notice about me
I can't really ask them without having them assume that I'm a narcissist.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Favorite movies: Favorite directors include Stanley Kubrick, Akira Kurosawa, and the Coen Brothers. A sampling of other films I've really liked: Lawrence of Arabia; The Baader-Meinhoff Complex; Lust, Caution; Trumbo; Waltzing with Bashir; Howl's Moving Castle; The English Patient; Requiem for a Dream; Pineapple Express; Shaun of the Dead; American Psycho.

Favorite Shows: Breaking Bad, Samurai Champloo, Archer, Southpark.

Favorite Music: as far as newer music, I enjoy the Avett Brothers, Justin Townes Earle, Sharon Jones and all things Dap-Tone, Charles Bradley, Lee Fields and the Expressions, Raphael Saadiq, Father John Misty, Goyte, LCD Soundsystem, Jack White, Real Estate, Jacuzzi Boys. Favorite bands/artists from the past include Led Zeppelin, The Velvet Underground, Joy Division, Jane's Addiction, Elvis Costello, The Modern Lovers, The Yardbirds, Blind Faith, Mark Bolan, Nirvana, John Cale, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Amy Winehouse, Patsy Cline, Louis Armstrong.

I named my son after Miles Davis.

Favorite Food: Spanakopita, Doro Wat, Saag Paneer, Chicken Adobo, Calamari, Caesar Salad, a Hires Big H with French fries and a shake, bacon, Rusted Sun pizza, a really sharp cheddar cheese.

Favorite Books: Too many to list here. I was going to write my dissertation on T.E. Lawrence's "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom," Jean Genet's "Prisoner of Love" and George Orwell's "Homage to Catalonia," but I thought better of it. My favorite living author is probably Michael Ondaatje.
The six things I could never do without
Considering the state of the planet at this time, I think it is more important for all of us to think about what we actually can do without.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
I just spend a lot of time thinking. The exciting part for me is that I never know what I might decide to get interested in, or what I might spend a lot of time thinking about (and doing research on) next.
On a typical Friday night I am
Meeting a friend for a cocktail or dinner; making dinner for friends; hanging out with my daughter; curling up with a good book and a fuzzy blanket; seeing a movie, or going out to hear some live music.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
is that I am living in noble poverty at this time, though I do own my own home. Over the past three years, I did a lot of consultant work for the financial services industry and made more money than I ever had before, but I have fibromyalgia and can no longer work the long hours required without having a relapse.
You should message me if
-- You are intelligent and you read books. I do not care how much formal education you have had and I have just as much respect for blue-collar workers as for professionals -- in fact, I have much more respect for blue-collar workers who are honest, compassionate, and hard-working than I do for professionals who do not possess those qualities. At the same time, I am super smart and don't want to date anyone who feels threatened by a highly intelligent woman. I also don't understand people who aren't curious about the world, or who are not passionate about stretching their minds.

-- You are not more than five or six years younger than me.

-- You are not looking for instant gratification, and do not have a big agenda or checklist you expect me to fulfill. I really want to go out on some old-fashioned dates, where the expectation is no more than to meet someone new and have a good time. I am only interested in dating gentlemen.

-- You understand that I am not going to discuss anything very personal or very private with you until it seems appropriate, which would only be after we have gotten to know each other for a few weeks.

-- You do not expect me to ski, mountain climb, or jump out of a plane. I have very little interest in sports. I like to dance, or do yoga sometimes, and that's how I get my exercise.
