I'm here hoping to find someone real. I value warmth, intelligence, curiosity, and a sense of humor. Or at least enough of a sense of humor that you'll put up with my jokes. (According to OKCupid's 3-variable funny test, I desire to see more testicles on fire. I'm quite intrigued by thenir use of the word "more"....)
I have myriad interests, only a few of which are in the mainstream. Unfortunately, as I am not, nor do I ever aspire to be a hipster, that does not make me hip or ironic. I do hope it makes me adorkable, though. I love:
• Classical music (and am trying to educate myself on opera).
• Traveling (okay, that one's mainstream). Been to 47 states and 20 countries.
• Flying. I'm planning on getting my pilot's license as soon as I finish saving up the moolah it's going to cost to get my license.
• Science, astronomy, cosmology, particle physics.
• Food. OK, a semi-mainstream interest. I love eating out, I love classic cocktails, and I love entertaining (i.e., I love to cook when it's for other people). I strive to get to the point when people ask me, "Have you been to ____ restaurant?" and the odds are better than 50% that I have.
If you share some of my interests, great! And if not, let's learn from each other.
Bringing people together.
Now that I own a Sodastream, I drink seltzer water like it's my job.
Walking quickly. Even for a New Yorker. (In a group or with someone slower, I do walk with them. I'm not a tool.)
This. (I also have perfect pitch. Both make me equally fun at parties. :) )
Making others feel appreciated.
I'm a non-fiction kinda guy, and I've f*cking loved science even before I F*cking Love Science. Two of my favorite authors are particle physicist/cosmologist Lawrence Krauss and string theorist Brian Greene. (I also love Neil deGrasse Tyson, but I've never read any of his books. I just listen to his podcast.)
I also have a *lot* of cookbooks.
I love dramas, documentaries, action movies, and comedies but the ones on my shelf are usually action or really quotable comedies because of their rewatch value:
Airplane!, The American President, Back to the Future, The Bourne Identity, Top Secret! (Okay, "The American President" is neither, but it's Aaron Sorkin, so it's awesome.)
The Big Bang Theory. BBC Sherlock. My friends recently got me into Game of Thrones, but I have a ways to go to catch up. (Update: Full-on addict now.) House of Cards.
America's Test Kitchen and Lidia on PBS.
Some of my favorite shows in the past have been Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, and The West Wing.
I mostly listen to classical music. Here are some favorite composers: Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, Mahler, Chopin.
Every once in a while, I end up listening to a musical for months on end. Recently it was Wicked, then last year I sawThe Book of Mormon and that became the musical du jour for several jours.
I'm a foodie, and try to be open-minded. I will try most things, with the understanding that you don't have to like everything you try, but you'll also never expand your horizons without trying new things. Some of my favorite foods include dan dan noodles, Brazilian rodizio, halo-halo, passionfruit and mangoes and most things with passionfruit or mangoes in them, bubble tea, phở, pumpkin-flavored anything (except, oddly, pumpkin pie), and oysters. Regardless of the diverse set of cultures that my food interests draw upon, there are no substitutes for pizza and Carvel ice cream cake.
Jim Jefferies, Louis CK, and Patton Oswalt, Joe Rogan.
Sustainability, climate change, and the myopic public and politicians who have gotten us into our current mess.
Why the OK Cupid Android app automatically puts on the CAPS LOCK when you try to message somebody. (Do they like people yelling at each other? :) )
You like that I didn't end that last sentence with a preposition. :)
You're smiling in one of your profile pictures.
You consider yourself to be a warm and caring individual.
You're not perfect.
