My self-summary
I love reading. I'm mainly into poncey literary fiction, but I also really enjoy lighter stuff too. One of my favourite things to do is curl up in an armchair with a good book beside an open fire. Or at least it would be if I owned a fireplace. Or an armchair.

I also really like to travel. I spent a total of three years visiting Europe, the US, Australia and Africa. It was amazing, and I'd definitely like to travel again in the future. ...I think the day I found out that extra-strong mints could cure my reading-induced travel sickness was one of the happiest days of my life.

While I was in Africa, I did some volunteering work. It was one of the most satisfying experiences of my life, and I'd really like to do it again someday.

I've recently become a big fan of cooking. Homemade food tastes so much better. I make a mean four seasons pizza, and my potato and chorizio omelette has not caused anyone to vomit. Yet. I also bake - brownies are pretty damn awesome. Who ate all the pies? It's me, I ate all the pies.

In fact, it's a good job that I love running and hiking as much as I do, otherwise I'd be really goddamn fat.
What I’m doing with my life
I work for the Foreign Office as a policy advisor. This involves a lot of reading international newspapers and blogs and watching Al-Jazeera constantly. I also get shouted at a lot. If you've ever seen "The Thick Of It", I'm basically Ollie, except less of a twat. Possibly.

It's just dawned on me how *big* London is, so I'm trying to explore the city as much as possible. I'm fascinated by ancient history and architecture so I absolutely love this place.
I’m really good at
Knowing a little about a lot. My knowledge of the world is broad and shallow. Like a puddle.

Actually, I do know rather a lot about swearing. Ask me about gravely offending people in fifteen languages.

Also, it turns out that I'm rather good at trading shares. I am officially the World's Worst Socialist.
The first things people usually notice about me
That I'm wearing a suit and tie in all weathers. My pictures are all horribly misleading in that regard.

My striking resemblance to Brad Pitt's younger and uglier brother, Doug Pitt

Update: Recently been told I look like Zac Goldsmith. Suicide seems the only honourable choice.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I consume an unhealthy amount of media so I'll try to keep this brief.

Books: Infinite Jest; The Bonfire Of The Vanities; Gravity's Rainbow; No Country For Old Men; Candide; Crime and Punishment; Catch 22 . My favourite authors are Iain Banks; JM Coetzee; Cormac McCarthy; Terry Pratchett; Edgar Allan Poe; Jonathan Franzen; Ian McEwan; James Joyce; Sue Townsend; Gabriel Garcia Marquez

I also read a lot of non-fiction, especially ancient history and biographies. Charlie Brooker is also a legend, though he'd probably call me a twat for saying so.

Movies: Although I'm more of a book person, I still love watching movies. Some favourites: Chinatown; The Lives of Others; City of God;In Bruges; Gladiator; Aliens; In The Loop; Network; Good Night and Good Luck; The Hurt Locker; Full Metal Jacket; The Room, Shark Attack 3: Megalodon

Music: The Rolling Stones; Pink Floyd; Led Zeppelin; Nick Cave; Bob Dylan; Joan Baez; Richard Thompson; Tom Waits; The Clash; The Smiths; Leonard Cohen; Chuck Berry; Al Green; Jedi Mind Tricks; Jamie T; Immortal Technique; Bach; Mozart; Chopin. I'm always up for listening to new bands - if it sounds good, I'll like it.

Food: I love all food, especially Italian, Indian, Mexican and Ethiopian.
The six things I could never do without
-BBC Radios 2 - 6Music, inclusive.
-Black coffee.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
The gradual erosion of civil liberties in this country.

The changing balance of global power.

Humanity's place in the universe.

Justin Timberlake.

He's so dreamy.
On a typical Friday night I am
Doing the same thing I do every night: Trying to take over the world! Funnily enough, my dastardly schemes usually seem to include alcohol.

Also practising my terrible dancing.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I use semi-colons in text messages.
You should message me if
You can tell me about things to see in London.... especially if they are Roman or Rome-related. On a bit of an SPQR kick at the moment.

You are Stevie Nicks circa 1976. See here for details.

You want explore life's great mysteries. Why are we here? Does God exist? Do Müller lace their Rice with opium? Seriously, I can't stop eating it.

You're a little bit kinky. I have a very dominant streak so if you're the other way inclined, that would be delightful.
