My self-summary
So it goes. I am a writer. An editor. A dreamer of pictures, I run in the night. A filler of text and word boxes. A hopeless romantic. A damn good cook. A listener. A bit of a talker. An old soul. An old friend. A feeler of wanderlust. A mostly Marxist. A reader. A guy who keeps score at baseball games.. A Hemingway guy. A hockey player. A night person. A coffee drinker. A cross-country driver. The one who turns out the lights.
What I’m doing with my life
Copy editing newspapers. Missing the Midwest. Waiting for the Packers season to start. No Diggity. No Doubt. Making lists. Reading. Drinking craft beer. Going to the gym, which is weird for me.
I’m really good at
I successfully changed "cul-de-sacs" to "culs-de-sac" for publication. I am irrationally proud of this moment.
The first things people usually notice about me
My wit. Whether it makes them laugh or pause and wonder if I am sarcastic depends on the day. Or the beard. Beard Envy is a very real problem, and I am trying to raise awareness.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: Hemingway, Tim O'Brien, Pam Houston, anything George Pelecanos. A Song of Ice and Fire. If you didn't understand Catcher in the Rye, I'm the guy to set you straight. I am gonna read your reading list, I promise.

Movies: The Big Lebowski, No Country For Old Men, Slap Shot. I have a theory that Road House is either the best or worst film ever made, depending on your point of view -- but can't be in between.

TV: True Detective, Parenthood, The Wire, Friday Night Lights, The Sopranos, Mad Men, Sons of Anarchy. Game of Thrones. Game of Fucking Thrones.

Music: Dylan, Pearl Jam, Springsteen, Avett Brothers, Sturgill Simpson, Pogues, DBT, Dropkick Murphys, Jason Isbell, Wilco, Waylon Jennings.

My current Americana kick has lasted four years and might no longer be considered a phase.
Six things I could never do without
Books, phone, concert tickets, iPhone, chef's knife and my cat Franklin.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
The novels of Ernest Hemingway, the fortunes of the Minnesota Twins, the beauty of a woman's neckline, what I want to be when I grow up and why the sea is boiling hot, and whether pigs have wings.
On a typical Friday night I am
Working. Those are sports nights. If I wasn't working, I'd be reading a book or watching Netflix or out looking for a Buffalo Trace bourbon and a snippet of original language.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Says my son it's all been done and someday yer gonna wake up old and gray
So go and try to have some fun showing warmth to everyone
You meet and greet and cheat along the way

There's a gateway in our mind that leads somewhere out there beyond this plane
Where reptile aliens made of light cut you open and pull out all your pain
You should message me if
You've ever considered naming a pet -- or child -- Benedict Cumberbatch, Rhaegar Targaryen OR Pasta Batman.

You, too, have an irrational fear of sinkholes.

Or you want to drink whiskey-gingers and make fun of Florida.
