I'm just me. There's no one else like me, thank goodness. I'm not sure I can be accurately described with words. I am someone who has to be *experienced* to figure out what I am. And even then, I'm sure many people would find it easier to just walk away, shaking their heads.
I make my money being a programmer. But what I really am, is a solutions finder. It's just that the solutions I come up with aren't always what people want to hear.
I am not perfect, but I am not a monster. At least, not all the time.
My reading material is largely Fantasy, with some Science Fiction and Mystery. I will occasionally read non-fiction but that's usually just computer books.
I am somewhat active, currently involved in Tai Chi, Shorin Ryu karate, and occasionally nude swimming (I bring the volleyball net for the NIFTY swims).
Oh yeah, I'm vanilla. Okay, maybe a little bit pistachio, but still not kinky in any way.
I am in a relationship with rainbow. We've been committed to each other for a very long time now, and I am sure will continue to be for an even longer time. Part of the success of our relationship is that we've never lived together. Somehow, it just never seemed the thing for us to do. That might be partly why we are poly (http://www.vanpoly.org/). We've both had other relationships along with our own. Right now her primary relationship is with her new son, who is, no word of a lie, you can ask any stranger on the street, the cutest baby *EVAR*!!! He is a darling to have around and their visits are sunshine on the dark side of the moon.
I am inoffensive, reliable, and fun
That a 32-bit way of saying "I'm a programmer", with some editing for privacy, since this is a public forum.
I do research at a local educational institute. It's pretty interesting stuff and I get to work with a lot of different technologies, which is quite fun. I'm learning a lot more about networking, databases, AI, and just about everything else. There's a lot of interfacing with hardware which, frankly, I am finding to be rather troublesome at times. Some hardware just does *NOT* want me talking to it. Although, to be fair, sometimes my problems are the fault of software (not always mine, just to be clear!). One bonus is that I can take a lot of courses for free, as long as it's applicable to work. That's a pretty impressive deal!
I teach tai chi at the local community centre. I also do the advanced classes there. It's great fun teaching but it's also a lot of fun learning new stuff, as well as teaching regulars stuff that's new to them. The beginner's class is the Yang Style 24 form. Intermediates learn the Yang Style 48 form (alternate classes to cover the first half, and then the second half). The advanced class covers whatever we want. There's the Yang 32 Sword form, a Sun form, we've done a Chen form (not all of it though), and over the summer we're learning a 13 Postures form. That one is short, but there's still a lot of practicing needed.
I'm 6th kyu rank in Shorin Ryu karate. I only go once a week (if that) so my progress is going to take a very, very long time. I've done longbow archery, both 2D and 3D targets. I did fencing for a while but that got too expensive so I stopped.
I'm a *HUGE* gaming freak so I do gaming with friends (mostly board games, some RPG), a lot of reading, I paint miniatures and do HirstArts plaster casting. And I collect games. I've got two closets jammed floor-to-ceiling with games. And then some. I also collect miniatures to (eventually) be painted. They only take up one shelving unit, but it also goes floor-to-ceiling.
Being organized. Not always tidy, but at least I try to keep stuff in it's place, wherever that place (or box) might be.
Lifting heavy things.
I'm a very good programmer. I make very good cell phone games. They just look bad because artistry is something I am *NOT* good at, unfortunately. I haven't done any cell phone work for a while (although I did do an iPhone course at BCIT) but I still believe that portable gaming the the best!
Oh! And tying cherry stems into knots with my tongue. In fact, I think it's time to expand and instead of doing just the normal knot I think it's time to try going for a figure-8 knot! Probably other things as well. I'll have to poll my friends.
I guess it depends if I want to be seen or not. When I'm feeling less social, I can blend into the crowd and just move along and no one notices. But when I want to be seen, you can be sure that *no*one* will forget that I was there!
I've had the young daughter of a friend describe me as "squishy". She's not wrong. Kids are very smart that way.
Terry Pratchett - Small Gods is *SUCH* a great book!
Douglas Adams - THHGTTG is a classic!
Ray Bradbury - Mostly his short stories. It's fun reading sci-fi from the 60's.
Alan Dean Foster - So many books. So many series of books!
J.K.Rowling - The Harry Potter Septuplet. I really want to see what she does next.
Anne McCaffrey - Dragonriders of Pern.
R.A.Salvatore - Drizzt!
Pretty much anything Fantasy or SciFi.
The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy! All in one sitting! What a bladder-burster that one was!
Billy Elliot is a lot of fun.
Alien/s - If you like really *good* horror.
Monster's Inc. is amazing for the quality of the animation.
Wall-e - Even *more* amazing for how it was done!
I enjoy pretty much most music, Meatloaf, Cyndi Lauper, Kate Bush, Stan Rogers, Celtic, new age, electronica, Weird Al, OC Remix, a capella, etc.
Pasta, fresh fruit (apples, bananas), fresh-out-of-the-bread-machine sourdough bread (even better with cinnamon and raisins!), blue licorice ice cream, etc. I used to pretty much live off peanut butter and peanut snacks until I found out that, even though I'm not allergic to them, my immune system is. So no more peanuts for me.
There's work to think about too. Unfortunately it's not the kind of work that you can just leave at the door. It sometimes comes with me. Fortunately I can tuck it away for later if I'm busy with something else. Which is usually the case when I'm not at work!
Speaking of fun:
Okay, that link's not working any more, try this one:
