Like when I'm traveling, my favorite thing is to pick a destination (usually a restaurant) and then spend the day walking and checking out night markets, street food, cool bridges, etc, on my way there.
I like unfamiliar experiences because they get me thinking about new things and in new ways. That's why I love LA and the crazy variety we've got in food, music, architecture, and landscapes. It's not always pretty but I think it's always interesting. Especially on a bike.
I get super excited about design (particularly interfaces + typography) and how to make things simpler. A well-designed door handle, bike bag, or salad tongs makes me happy every single time I use it.
I'm looking for someone who wants to explore LA with me
- You're super curious
- You're into trying new food and sharing meals
- You like a wide range but skew low-fi / personal / affordable
- You'd take me to see things I've never even heard of
I focus on creating experiences that evoke a sense of wonder.
My first project was a painting game set in an entirely white world where you splatter paint to figure out what's around you. It took 3 years to make and was the hardest, strangest, most satisfying thing I've ever done. Here's a video.
I like dreaming things up and then figuring out a way to make them real. It's the best way I've found to really explore something.
MOVIES: Time Bandits, Tampopo, Spirited Away, Secret of Kells, The Big Lebowski, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Dark Crystal, All About Eve, Juno, Brazil, This is Spinal Tap, Walkabout, Fitzcarraldo, Twentieth Century, and The Life of Brian. The last movie that really stood out for me was Meek's Cutoff.
SIDENOTE: My favorite thing IN THE WORLD is stuff I think I'm not going to like but do. For example, Meek's Cutoff is about people walking slowly around the desert but still manages to be tense, surprising and interesting. Stuff that comes out of left field has a chance to open up a whole new world, like that Borges story about an encyclopedia from another planet. I've had a similar experience lately with Indonesian grocery stores. So many new flavors!
MUSIC: Janelle Monae, Regina Spektor, The Decemberists, Metric, Mighty Boosh, Sufjan Stevens, The White Stripes, Belle and Sebastian, Blind Willie McTell, Daft Punk, The Kills, The Fiery Furnaces. Recently: Grimes, Agnes Obel, STRFKR.
PEOPLE: Herzog, Jim Henson, Johnny Cash. I admire people who can hold contradictory opinions like Herzog's love and abhorrence for the jungle.
FOOD makes me amazingly happy. I'll eat pretty much anything but my favorites are sambal, fresh bread, durian, dim sum, and gooey cheeses I've never had before.
It's amazing how much effort it takes to write a nice, personal note to a complete stranger. And when I'm on the receiving end, honestly, I don't even look at the message. I read your profile and if you seem interesting *then* I'll read your message and reply.
If you want to message me but don't know what to say, relax. Just tell me about a memorable meal you had in the last year. If I like your profile I guarantee I'll reply. Simple!
