My self-summary
I like well-rounded, interesting, and curious people, and those profound, wide-ranging conversations that stretch into the wee hours. That said, I also like to have fun, to laugh, and to make others laugh, so not everything has to be super-serious or super-deep. I'd say that my positive qualities--in descending order of importance--are being kind, passionate, smart, funny, and athletic. Most people would describe me as an intellectual, but I'm also into sports and fitness. I have a very logical, analytical side, but I'm also all heart. I'm an introvert, but I'm happier around other people.

I have a challenging and interesting job (two, actually), and have a five-year-old son to whom I'm very devoted, but I am missing that special someone in my life. Just completed all the legal stuff on my divorce, after having been separated for well over a year now. My ex and I have a amicable relationship, and share custody of our son. But I am definitely ready to move on in terms of a new relationship.
What I’m doing with my life
I care about, and like to talk about, ideas. My work (academic and journalistic) is about social and political issues, and I'm very passionate about that, but I'm also interested in the arts, science, etc.

I have strong political views, and aim to help change the world. I say this without a trace of irony. (I find it very strange that OkC doesn't have political views on "My Details." I would think that lots of people would want to search based on political compatibility--I know I would.) I describe myself as a socialist and radical democrat (small "d"). If the word "socialist" makes you want to run screaming from the room, it's probably not worth your while to read further.
I’m really good at
Thinking, talking, writing, cycling. I also think it's important to be able to do things that you're not great at, and be OK with it. That can actually be fun and liberating. I pretty much have to be great at thinking, talking, and writing, which are my work and really important to my sense of self. I don't have to be great at dancing, skating, running, etc.--but I can still enjoy them all.
The first things people usually notice about me
I don't really know, since I'm not one of those people. I would guess, probably, the fact that I have very little hair on my head. What else? That I just rode by on a bike, going pretty fast. That I'm the guy standing at the front of the room on the first day of class, saying, "I'm Professor *****. If you're not here for *****, you're in the wrong room."

The six things I could never do without
Words, sunshine, music, family, friends, love. Could I do without the world? Well, I've asked people before whether they would be willing to go spend a year living on one of the moons of Jupiter or Saturn. Most people say no, but my answer (practical considerations aside) would be an enthusiastic yes. (The commute, I admit, would be a drag.) Could I do without a broader community? I wouldn't want to, but I could as long as I had friends and family to rely on. I'm not sure I could do without books, electricity, or animals, but it said only six!
I spend a lot of time thinking about
How to make the world a better place--more equal, more democratic, more free, and more just.
On a typical Friday night I am
Having dinner with my son, playing with him in a park, and putting him to bed. On Saturday night, though, I'd like to go out with the right person for a nice dinner, a movie, live music, a few drinks ...
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
By and large, people's profiles make it seem like they're always upbeat and happy. Well, life isn't all sunshine and lollipops. Everyone has ups and downs. I think we'd all be better off if we admitted that.
You should message me if
If you recognize some of yourself in the above description. If you have a real passion for something--whether the arts, sciences, politics, and are looking for a partner who will really want to know your passions. If, when you describe yourself, you find yourself writing about what seem like paradoxes or contradictions--but are just different aspects of your personality. If you really want to say something about yourself and why you think we might have a connection (not just say "hi"). Above all, if you think we might hit it off and are willing to give that a chance.
