My self-summary
Hey, I'm Alex. Nice to meet you! I'm a grad student working my way through an interesting part of my life.

I dance, I sometimes write music, and I play the viola and the piano. These are some of the things I do to distract myself from working on my PhD in Being a Computer Nerd. Also lots of (PC, console) gaming.

I tend to be quite silly, and don't take much too seriously (time, place, and good taste are of course things). My puns are industrial strength, and I preemptively feel sorry for you having to experience them. The strongest opinion that I have, which defines most of my worldview, is to be suspicious of one-sidedness and extreme strong opinions.

Cats > dogs, but some dogs are okay I guess. Not into sports at all, but I do like playing the occasional pickup game of anything. I've traveled a little bit, and look forward to maybe doing some more once I graduate.
What I’m doing with my life
My main mission in life for the next year or so is finishing my degree. It's like a job but at a more chill pace. I get to write a giant piece of software all by myself, and eventually write a giant thesis to accompany it, so that I get a 'Dr' in front of my name. Sometimes the school flies me out to exotic places where I get to present a 15 minute powerpoint about a paper I wrote.

I'm a creative type - INTP if you're into the whole Myers-Briggs thing. I've decided that after I graduate and leave the intensity of a decade plus of university, I want to try my hand at the 'starving artist' schtick and find some people to develop indie video games with. Who knows, it might turn into a non-starving artist gig if it goes well :) There's always the 9-to-5 job option, but I'd like to hold off on that until absolutely necessary.
I’m really good at
Staying in school, apparently. I'm also pretty okay at playing the piano and doing other things musical or rhythmic. There's also design, programming, figuring out technology, and the other occupational hazards that come with my line of study.

I've been dancing Swing (Lindy Hop, etc) for a few years now, and am always trying to improve. Have I seen you at Dovercourt House on a Saturday night before, I wonder?
The first things people usually notice about me
Height. Eyes. Hint of a Russian accent, especially when I start talking fast. Some say I look intense and/or serious, but that's just my default resting face. Honest.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I've read a lot of sci-fi to pass the time when I commuted to school for 8 years. If you're into anything written by Robert J. Sawyer or John Scalzi, I'm sure we'd have lots to mutually geek out over.

TV and Movies: It's weird to just list a bunch of things here. Let's discover these in-person? I like things with good acting and production values, engaging plots, touching on important issues, but also things with lots of explosions and cheesy one-liners. My dream movie/show has all of these, I guess.

Food: I don't like seafood. While I eat meat, I'm not in love with it or anything. If I had the means, I could happily eat at Vegetarian Haven on Baldwin every day. I'd really miss bacon, though.

Board games: I've been going out with friends to these new places popping up over Toronto that let you play board games while consuming caffeinated/alcoholic beverages. It's a great time, and people keep showing me cool new games.

Computer/console games: I've taken a liking to more indie-type games lately and avoided the blockbuster AAA releases. First-person shooters are my favourite. I still play Doom (from 1993) as the community keeps putting out neverending awesome content to this day. I like to play fun games with people too. Not ashamed to admit enjoying playing with a Wii. If you inwardly/outwardly snickered at that sentence, then we'll get along just great :)

Music: I don't actively go out of my way to listen to music, which is weird because of my musical background. Having said that, I dig almost everything by Daft Punk and Infected Mushroom. (late) Beethoven and Chopin are my classical bros. I'll absolutely go see live music with you if there's dancing involved.
The six things I could never do without
This question makes me nervous. I like to stay independent of things, even if I enjoy their presence in my life.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Way too much. I'm a chronic overthinker and often a perfectionist, but I'm working on fixing that.

I also idly make up stories/timelines for the squirrels and pigeons I pass on my walks to and from school. Do you think the regular black pigeons ostracize the cream/white-coloured ones?
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I love the McDonalds Dollar Menu. Ask me about Burger Swarm(TM)
You should message me if
...the generic "if you think I'm attractive enough and that we might connect" response.

What does that mean? Here are some broad brush strokes:
- I like that feeling when conversation flows smoothly and you start to relax and just say things around the other person
- I like the butterflies feeling
- I like oxytocin
- I like being able to go out and do stuff with a person, and it feeling like we add to each other's experience

I'm open to a lot of things, but don't know exactly what I want from a person (ie, the type of relationship) until I meet them. If this choose-our-own-adventure mentality works for you too, as opposed to a grand-master-plan-MUST-FIND-LIFE-MATE-NOW approach, then we're good to go.
