My self-summary
I delight in delving into the not oft noted, smaller spaces/details in between things. Whether it's through laughter (think George Carlin) or poetry (think Adrienne Rich), nothing makes me happier than to be in the company of those who speak essential truths (be they revelatory or small) with spare eloquence or humor. I love to travel, but only if it's not as a sight-seeing tourist. I love to be with large groups of people, but only if it's not too noisy to allow meaningful one-on-one conversations in the midst of the party. I love being with an inherently creative man, but only if he's not a "blue plate special" that comes with a side of narcissism.
What I’m doing with my life
Ten years ago I realized my dream of co-owning a contemporary art gallery. Fast forward to the present, the gallery still exists in the virtual world and helps feed my enormous passion for contemporary art, but to pay the bills I continue to do what I've done for the better part of the last 30 years, namely produce programs for tv.
I’m really good at
listening to and processing what people need to say; being empathic; having fun; being game (i.e.being open to new things and ideas); indulging (almost to the point of getting lost) in my passions and interests; not being a tourist when I travel; letting the people in my life know how important they are to me
The first things people usually notice about me
my hair and my smile
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
books -- too many to say, but at any given time I have about 4 by my bed
movies -- "A Separation," "Woman of the Dunes," "In the Name of the Father," and "Truly, Madly, Deeply."
tv shows -- The Wire is my favorite show of all time
food -- sea urchin, truffles (the kind the pigs find), lobster, fried clams, a great steak, and amazing chocolate chip or ginger cookies
music -- really too many to say, pretty eclectic in my taste...came to jazz late in life, so trying to make up for lost time.
living artists (you didn't ask, but you should have!) -- James Turrell, William Kentridge, Pipilotti Rist, Anselm Kiefer
Six things I could never do without
my peeps; access to good food; access to nature, including the ocean or some body of water; art, music, books (and a 7th I'm embarrassed to admit, my I-phone)
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Contemporary art, state of the country and the world, my family and my friends. Then, on occasion: how much time elapsed between the first time a living organism shed a tear and the first time a living organism laughed out loud (and wouldn't it have been amazing if the laugh had come first).
On a typical Friday night I am
out to an opening and then dinner or a movie or a party with friend(s)...but more often than not I'm home in time to watch Real Time with Bill Maher on the tube.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Though I know I should give it to my niece, I'm still holding on to one of my stuffed animals from childhood.
You should message me if
You consider yourself far left of center, and a lover of music, books, and art. You're intelligent, kind, empathic, honest, enjoy sitting around talking until the wee hours of the morn with friends (preferably with either an ocean and/or some good food and drink in front of you); have some edge but not at the expense of your empathy or humanity; and can honestly say you're ready for a long-term relationship.
