I'm doing my residency in psychiatry - so close to being done with licensing exams - and in a couple of years I'll be able to get a real job with regular hours! Honestly though, I don't mind working a different rotation each month with demanding schedules. (Right now I'm working 12+ hour days doing my ER rotation, 2 days on, 2 days off. It's pretty awesome once you get the hang of it!) Those 2 days off are golden and give me time to work out, go for a hike and just chill out.
I also love how much fun my group of fellow residents is - we get together and play board games once a week, and we also get out and explore new restaurants, lounges and stuff.
I could still use a recommendation or two since I've only been here for a few weeks. What's your favorite place to grab a bite or get a drink? :-)
Movies: I usually never remember when someone asks me point blank, but if I can just consult this handy reference... I really enjoyed Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Alien, and I loved Frances Ha (who wouldn't love a fairy tale about hipsters in New York?). Limitless was a blast, and so was I Am Legend, and I couldn't stop laughing during Inherent Vice. :-)
Shows: Honestly, I rarely watch tv, but if I had to name a show it would be Archer. I used to watch the Simpsons religiously, but they had more stamina in making that show then I had in tuning in!
Music: I actually listen to a lot of classical music including "modern classical" (if that exists), like Steve Reich. Bach is always an option. And I really like Boards of Canada (EDM) and Medeski Martin and Wood (jazz/funk).
Food: I'm a sucker for diverse and unexpected food options (Cuban-Chinese?), and who can say no to fried chicken!
Seasons. So far Honolulu has always been 85 degrees which is pleasant for sure, but I miss autumn and the smell of burning leaves. It's probably more psychological than anything else, since autumn always held the promise of a new school year which meant meeting a whole new group of people to get to know.
Which brings us to friendship, I guess? :-)
There's this app on my phone called Medscape (Doctors only, sorry!) that is ridiculously helpful for looking up detailed medical info like drug dosages, side effects, etc. (Beats carrying around a stack of textbooks!)
Comfort food. I'm a sucker for anything fried (shameful to admit, especially coming from a physician). It's a good thing I work out...
Including pullups - in many ways, the perfect exercise.
-You know a cool spot where I can re-learn to surf (away from the crowds).
-You find it more charming than dorky that I have two tattoos... of physics equations. ;-)
