My self-summary
Sorry folks, I've got myself a bomb-ass girlfriend. I'll just leave this here to make sure everyone understands just what they're missing out on. Mwah.

No, as a matter of fact, I'm NOT down to earth. I'm an ambitious, accomplished weirdo. I want to live life my way, with no compromise, and it's hard to do that without working hard and planning. But I'm learning to relax and live in the moment, too. I'm a writer, which I've applied to an academic career and writing about music, and now I'm finally getting around to writing a novel. Aesthetics are important to me - I'm fascinated by the beauty of the mysterious, abstract, horrific, transgressive, and grotesque. I help run an art gallery and I'm also a musician, a little bit.

I moved to Tampa from Tokyo, where I've lived for about four years altogether. I speak Japanese and I'm professionally committed to studying Japan, but by God am I glad to be back in the U.S.A. Believe it or not, it's actually a happier place.

I'm politically radical, and very interested in politics, but I haven't had time for much activism for the past few months.

I've been taking Meyers-Briggs tests a bit lately, and the type that comes out most often is ENTJ, a.k.a. 'The Field Marshall'. That sounds really scary, but it mostly means I'm an outgoing leader and problem solver who's interested in seeing other people be the best they can be. That can seem aggressive or negative to some people, but I'm working on making sure I sound as supportive as I intent to be.
What I’m doing with my life
I am changing and I am growing. I'm becoming more real. I'm learning to live without fear. The people in Tampa have been amazing to me - I feel like I've accomplished and experienced more here than in the decade before that.

For work, I'm a philosopher/sociologist and college teacher. But I'm increasingly disillusioned with higher education as a career and I'm developing some exit strategies - specifically, by writing potboiler zombie novels and teaching yoga.

After a lifetime spent with my nose in books, I'm trying to spend more time learning to understand people. I just really want to meet as many interesting people as possible, and maybe get them all talking to each other.
I’m really good at
I'm mainly a writer, and I do a lot of it, and I'm good enough to get paid a lot for it and published all over the place (though not necessarily always both at the same time).

I can do a full handstand.

My friends think I'm a great musician, but I'm skeptical.

I'm good at a lot of other things, too, but listing more of them would make me sound like a) a self-important asshole and, in many cases, b) a perv.
The first things people usually notice about me
Depends on my mood. Sometimes I'm a loud, wisecracking jerkoff, and then occasionally I'm sober. (Seriously though, I do tend to be outgoing and friendly and curious about people. (And I don't drink THAT much.))

I'm tall and in pretty good shape, and some people seem to respond to that.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Dark shit that will scar you for life. Strangely enough, since I'm actually a super nice guy.

Books: William S. Burroughs, Jeff Vandermeer, Jorge Luis Borges, Kafka, H.P. Lovecraft, Samuel R. Delaney, Ishmael Reed, Iceberg Slim

Graphic Novels: I've been on a big weird-comics kick lately. I'm a huge fan of Jesse Moynihan's Forming (Google it!), C.F.'s POWR MSTRS, a variety of crazy-ass Japanese horror manga, Charles Burns, Chris Ware, KRAZY KAT, Moebius

Music: Psychic TV, Burial, Wu-Tang Clan, Grouper, Holy Other, Emeralds, Peaking Lights, Kieth Fullerton Whitman, Hawkwind

Movies: Alejandro Jodorowsky, Elias Merhej, The Brothers Quay, Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino,

Food: Mexican, Indian, Thai, anything hot, really.

Shows: Mostly just to kill time. 30 Rock is my not-too-guilty pleasure.
Six things I could never do without
A library
The Internet
Food in significant quantities
A plan for conquest
I spend a lot of time thinking about
How to never have to work a real job again, and therefore always be free to say what I really think. Which is often something really weird/offensive/challenging.
On a typical Friday night I am
Out at a weird art/music show, discovering that once you get through that thin layer of anxiety, wierdos are the BEST people.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Is that I signed up for an online dating site.

I believe the chances are good that if you don't use and endorse the Oxford comma, you are a traitor and Communist in thought, deed, or spirit.
You should message me if
You're confident and have a positive outlook. You have big goals and you work hard because you're full of passion for the world. You take care of your body because you want to do adventurous and fun things with it for a long time to come. You take care of your mind because you know nothing matters without it. You do your own thing and don't waste time worrying about other people's flaws.

I'm mostly just looking to meet new people. I love the people in the Bay so far, so I know there are some cool ones out there.
