My self-summary
Been on this site for a while and have almost always found those I've met, including a number of now very good friends, very enjoyable. I would prefer to avoid "the crazies" if at all possible.

I am originally from Alabama but, according to everyone I've met, do not at all seem like it (no accent). Lived there until heading to college in the Northeast, which started a stint there and in NYC for some years. I have been here in Madison five years now and really like it!
What I’m doing with my life
One year into writing a dissertation on Russian cultural history, late-Imperial/early Soviet period. Defending it in 2017 on the centennial would suit it nicely. I'm excited to have a fellowship next year which will give me the opportunity to research in Europe.

Angling to be a university professor -- risky, but good reasons to think I'm on the right track. I basically am attempting to make a career out of learning a ton about things I find interesting and then telling others about them. So far, so good.
I’m really good at
bad jokes and learning foreign languages
The first things people usually notice about me
My dashing good looks, probably. Every once in a while my winning personality overshadows them. Hey, I heard self-confidence was good on these things.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I am a movie "buff." Work and life have kept me from following recent movies as closely as I used to, though I will see a dozen or so when the film festival comes around. I will watch anything, no matter how weird or, alternately, how dumb. All the better if it's old. Some of my recent favorites are The Grand Budapest Hotel, Ida, The Color Wheel, Leviathan, Drive. The all-time favorites question is too difficult to answer. I like "quality" TV too, but my favorites gravitate to the irreverent such as Archer and Bob's Burgers.

I used to follow contemporary music closely, too (my brother was in the Athens indie rock scene many years ago), but that has really fallen by the wayside. Now I just listen to WFMU all day. In a pinch, my favorite music at home is by John Fahey or gypsies and "out" is by Prince or Hall & Oates.

Books: Moby Dick, Petersburg by Andrei Bely.

Just as very beautiful people tend to be a little unusual looking in a way that leaves a striking impression, so too are the most delicious foods a little on the gross side. Some of my favorites this applies to: sardines, escargots, any kind of sausage, caviar, fried sprats, anchovies, anything fermented, really stinky cheese, lamb tartare.
Six things I could never do without
Sodastream (seltzer plus key lime or ginger juice is exquisite)
Library card
smartphone flashcards app
eh, that's enough.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
whether or not the brain is the best organ. It is unfairly represented in these internal debates, for obvious reasons.
On a typical Friday night I am
Out of the apartment and happy to be there. Probably cultivating some interest and/or drinking.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I find this question, coming from the internet, a tad sinister.

(That is my answer to this question, not a non-answer.)
You should message me if
You would like to meet up! I am a face to face person.
