- Knowing where to build my sentries.
I'm always reading.
Fiction: David Foster Wallace (his non-fiction is fantastic too), Cormac McCarthy, Patrick O'Brian, Dickens, Umberto Eco. George Martin made me re-examine by disdain for fantasy. There's some great stuff in that genre after all - I loved Erickson's Malazan Book of the Fallen, Sanderson's Mistborn, and Rothfus' Kingkiller Chronicles.
Non-fiction: I'll always read anything from John McPhee, James Gleick, Richard Dawkins, and Sasha Shulgin. Recent reads: Thinking Fast and Slow - Kahneman, Going Clear - Wright (cults fascinate me), Bailout - Barofsky, Aquatic Systems Engineering - Escobal, Modern Hydrionic Heating - Siegenthaler (needed to get my boiler replaced.)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Chinatown, Alien, Dog Day Afternoon. Generally, anything directed by The Cohen Brothers, P.T. Anderson, Scorsese, Kubrick, Aronofsky, or Christopher Guest. Absolutely terrible movies that I'll still watch when they pop up: Dune, Showgirls, Roadhouse.
All time: The Wire, Deadwood, Arrested Development, The Larry Sanders Show, The Sopranos.
Currently enjoying: Breaking Bad, Justified, Louie, Game of Thrones, Mad Men, Stewart/Colbert.
Currently not enjoying: Watching my poor, sad Sabres muddle through another season.
All over the map, depending on my mood or what I'm doing. Some artists from my current playlist: Tom Waits, Belle and Sebastian, TMBG, Slowdive, The Be Good Tanyas, Bob Wills, Camera Obscura, M. Ward, Magnetic Fields, Beastie Boys, Talking Heads, Stereolab, Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band, The Charlie Steinmann Orchestra, Bettie Serveert, The Smiths, Devo, PJ Harvey, Massive Attack, Tegan and Sara, Luna, The Rentals, The Vaselines, Ween, XTC, Yo La Tengo, Tosca.
