My self-summary
I grew up in the South, but I've been in NYC for about 25 years so I look upon it as home. I teach history at a college here in NYC. I enjoy a wide variety of cultural activities (both serious and not so serious), reading, going to museums, and checking out the great restaurants the city has to offer. I also love to cook and am pretty good at that. I'm a very independent person but at the same time quite social. I love biking around Brooklyn (and the other boroughs) exploring different neighborhoods and playing soccer on weekends. What else? While I might come across as rather serious in my profile (and photos, I guess), I'm certainly not always serious.
I’m really good at
Cooking, making cocktails, playing soccer
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books/writers: Ferrante's Neapolitan Novels, Mantel's Wolf Hall, Omnivore's Dilemma, Michael Chabon's novels, Junot Diaz, Dickens' Our Mutual Friend, Sam Lipsyte's The Ask, and Edward St. Aubyn's Patrick Melrose novels. I also read a lot of mysteries/detective novels.

Movies: Hitchcock's North by Northwest, the Battle of Algiers, a lot of Mike Leigh movies, some of Antonioni's films, Robert Altman films, Melville's Army of Shadows, Johnny To's Election, screwball comedies from the 1930s like The Lady Eve, the Big Lebowski, Billy Wilder's Some Like it Hot, Altman's the Long Goodbye, Chris Marker's movies. And I do love a good hollywood action movie/thriller.

Music: bands such as the Pixies, Pavement, the Mekons, Fugazi, Magnetic Fields, Yo La Tengo, Erik Satie

Food: a good steak frites, fish tacos, banh mi sandwiches, North Carolina BBQ

TV: Bojack Horseman, Transparent, True Detective, The Black Mirror, Sherlock, Homeland, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, the Wire, Battlestar Gallactica, The Walking Dead, The Killing

Podcasts: You Must Remember This, Intercepted, Guardian soccer
Six things I could never do without
Here are some things that aren't essential, I guess, but are things I really rather not do without. Books, my bike, coffee, good wine and bourbon, and the grand army plaza farmers market.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Urban planning, history, politics, what new things I will cook, and restaurants I want to check out, where I will travel next.
On a typical Friday night I am
Perhaps cooking a nice meal for someone (or just for myself), or going to see a movie or looking at some art, going out to dinner or a bar, or maybe just staying in and relaxing with a novel, some wine, and netflix (nice to stay in sometimes after a long week)
You should message me if
You're smart, kind, genuine, curious about the world and love to travel, a reader. You can be serious, but at other times not serious at all. You're into both highbrow and lowbrow culture. Would be great if you're a bit of a foodie since I love to cook and take advantage of the excellent restaurants in this fine city.
