My self-summary
Hmmm... Where to start? At the beginning, I suppose... I spent my adolescence wandering and writing beside the river that runs through my hometown. I have many fond memories of returning home wet, dirty, and blissfully exhausted after a long day of aimlessness. During this time, I also developed a strong dislike for the endless suburban developments and strip malls slowly encroaching on my little wilderness. Although a lot has happened since, I realize now how much these formative years defined my artistic, professional, and romantic aspirations.
What I’m doing with my life
Writing will always be my true love, but realistically, for me, fine arts and base survival are probably best kept separate. And so, after spending my twenties hitchhiking through Europe and teaching English in Asia, I returned to school to study engineering. (Not creative writing...) Even though my hometown is across the country, it's funny how everything has come full circle. Today, I'm a licensed civil engineer working for a small river science and restoration firm in Berkeley. After hours, I'm likely searching for the perfect word. Although I've come to enjoy the many creature comforts of a professional lifestyle, a suburban island will never be my dream destination. But a creative and committed partnership... well, that's me.
I’m really good at
Building things with my brain and making them with my hands, metaphor and algorithm, Bostonian tongue-in-cheek, running, rock climbing, being an older brother, seeing the world through another's eyes, light-hearted conversations about the biological imperative, and overall living with a lion's heart.
The first things people usually notice about me
My overactive imagination... I think.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
My favorite author is definitely Steinbeck. I recently read "All The Pretty Horses" by Cormac McCarthy and hope to read more of his novels in 2016. What else...? I wish that Richard Dawkins was my grandfather, and I think that Karl Pilkington is way funnier than Ricky Gervais. My musical taste spans the gamut, from electronic music to classical, punk to rap, but Radiohead and the Smiths take up the most amount of space on my iPod. In no particular order, my favorite movies are: There Will Be Blood (anything with Daniel Day-Lewis), American Beauty, Cinema Paradiso, Revolutionary Road, Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?, The Hudsucker Proxy (and anything by the Coen Bros).
The six things I could never do without
Grit- I'd rather rely on my guts than on my luck.
Friendship- To celebrate the good times and shrug off the hard times!
Family- I have 3 sisters, whom I love dearly, and have as such experienced firsthand the alternate reality of womanhood. Ideally, my counterpart would have the same with the men in her family.
Creativity- I'm primarily interested in the meandering comedies and tragedies of everyday life.
Passion- Even if it means sacrificing comfort...
Skepticism- Fact is stranger than religion.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
How to think less and live more in the present moment
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I once strapped a hammock to a bookshelf and sat down on it. Before I became an engineer. :)
