My self-summary
I'm looking for someone who is affectionate, warm, smart, funny, and has a loving heart. I am cultured, gentle, funny, romantic, youthful in body and mind, and fit (having run and lifted weights, with very few breaks, since 1974). People feel safe with me and confide in me, because they know I care about them and I don't betray confidences--ever. I like people and am proud of the fact that I can talk easily with everyone from the very youngest to the oldest.
What I’m doing with my life
I'm a writer.
I’m really good at
writing, entertaining children, sparking ideas, conversation, improvisation, singing torch songs, lifting weights, aerobic walking, leisurely walking, and I like rough country and rough water. I equally like paths, meadows, and lakes.

I think I'd be the most loving husband a woman could ever hope to find. (And grandparent, if she has grandkids.)
The first things people usually notice about me
How youthful I am, and that I do really well with little kids.
I wish I didn't look so young. It seems to make it hard for women my age to take me seriously, for what reason I don't know.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Jazz, blues, classical music, classic rock, and swing dancing. Torch songs.
Judy Garland, Billie Holliday, Billy Eckstine, Sarah Vaughan, Frank Sinatra, and Sierra Boggess. Kellie Pickler and Marty Stuart.
George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Sonny Rollins, Clifford Brown, Louis Armstrong, Charles Mingus, Herbie Hancock, and Thelonious Monk. Handel, Bach, Borodin, Mozart, Sibelius, and Debussy.
Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture.
Painters: El Greco, Cezanne, Matisse, Chagall, Gris, my mother, Picasso
Puppets: Irene Schnugle, Bruce Brusque, Weepy.
Movies: La Strada, Notorious, Dirty Dancing, Silk Stockings, The Gay Divorcee, most good romantic comedies, film noir
TV: Heckle and Jeckle, Mannix, PBS
Authors: Flannery O'Connor, Cervantes, Chaucer, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Dylan Thomas, Samuel Beckett, Mark Twain, Jane Austen, Jim Harrison, Aimee Bender, Lois Lowry, Elmore Leonard, Michael Chabon, and Marcus Zusak.
Six things I could never do without
writing, children, laughter, working out, books and music, and my public library.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Income inequality in the U.S. and elsewhere; how to combat the jungle ethics that are so entrenched around the world, including America. And where to find a woman with whom I can have a relationship like Norma Shearer and Irving Thalberg had, or Clark Gable and Carole Lombard had--very loving, and very funny.
On a typical Friday night I am
At a coffeehouse, talking with friends or writing. Listening to classical music, jazz, or other world music. Or out dancing.
You should message me if
you are looking for a fellow adventurer, a devoted friend, a tender lover, an intellectually exciting man, possibly a lifetime partner, and you are cultured, gentle, affectionate, and funny, even a bit silly at times, and slender.
Long-distance relationships are fine to start with. After all, they can quickly turn into NON-long distance relationships.
