My self-summary
I grew up on the east coast (NY) and went to college in the middle of the country (Iowa). I love the bay area but miss New England's seasons - the smells and colors - wood smoke, apple picking and maple syrup candy. These crazy snow storms are making me super nostalgic.

I've seen a tornado and been through the eye of a hurricane.
I've floated on my back in the Dead Sea and watched the full moon rise above the hills of Jordan to the east (magnificent) only to have the experience interrupted by 4 IAF F-18s split the air above my head.

In the summer of 1977 my Dad and I were on the Long Island Railroad on our way to a Mets game when the great blackout hit. NYC shut down for three days. It was really hot on that train.

I remain to this day a pretty intense baseball fan (A's).

I'm getting back into skiing a finally bought a Tahoe season pass.

I hate the sound of mosquitoes buzzing around my room.

Eggplant makes my mouth feel prickly but I love babaganush.

I've mountain biked Nepal and Sri Lanka. I've been all over Europe, to Israel, New Zealand (2x) and to 48 states - all but but Alaska and N. Dakota.

I appreciate BRC as much for forcing me to shut down all electronics for a week as I love it for its self expression and the kindred spirits in my 40 person camp.

At 24 I drove from Key West to San Francisco in 45 hours (accompanied). Beaumont, Texas is an awfully long way from El Paso, Texas.

As for you:

You're a slightly goofy hopeless idealist cemented in realism.

You feel deeply and strongly about things. You have strong opinions and a passion for *something*. You want to share - to teach (me). You're creative and a little edgy. I love self-expression. Be comfortable in silence. Be comfortable being open and present.

Once in a while be comfortable eating with your hands. Once in a while be comfortable eating your own words.
What I’m doing with my life
Being a dad.

Trying to figure out why my garage door opener is always on the fritz.

I work in technology. Most days I love what I do and get to work with a lot of really cool people. I spent six years working for a non-profit but succumbed to bills and such.

A few days a week run through the woods behind my house for meditation as much as anything else.
I’m really good at
Admitting when I've screwed up.

Making people feel at ease - especially kids which is just as well.
The first things people usually notice about me
I've never taken a poll.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Kurt Vonnegut, John Coetzee, Jhumpa Lahiri, Michael Chabon, Jonathan Franzen. Dave Eggers.

I just discovered Keith Richards is good at this too.

I like physical books - the smell of ink. A bookmark.

Movies: John Hughes, Monty Python, Coen Brothers and Wes Anderson. I binge on Netflix.

I've gotten really good at going to the movies by myself - especially when it's to a little place by my house where I can sit on a couch and eat pizza.

Music: snippets - Led Zeppelin. Iron and Wine. Pearl Jam. Nick Drake. M. Ward. The Pixies. the Rolling Stones. U2. Smashing Pumpkins. The Beastie Boys.

Whenever I buy tickets to a show I buy at least 2 with no idea who I'm going to drum up. I figure I'll find someone.

Food? I have no idea what to do with this on account of the fact that I love food. I very much dig cheese, will kill for good fried chicken and love grilled asparagus. Mmmm - sushi.
Six things I could never do without
Disclaimer: My kids aren't on this list. It would be akin to saying I couldn't live without my brain or heart. So here are 6 things I'd really rather not do without:

My pillow - I get all screwed up if I have to sleep in a hotel without it. Sleeping in a tent is a different story.

Good food.

the internet (yep. It's got something to do with my job. Besides, how would I check my OKC account without it?!)

My contacts/glasses

My amazing pack of friends

...ellipses, parentheses and other parenthetical forms - especially dashes.

(Not withstanding the brain, my heart and my kids.)
I spend a lot of time thinking about
How to spend my stock-pile of frequent flier miles.

what I want to be when I grow up...
oh yeah, right...

Why I don't have any halfway decent pictures of myself.

Where you are (for real).
On a typical Friday night I am
It's Friday night so I better figure this out lickety-split. It will probably involve my pack of friends, a pub, beer and Yahtzee. At least that's what's been happening for the last few weeks (when I'm on parenting hiatus).
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
There's lots to admit in private but for now you'll have to be satisfied with this:

I absolutely suck at parallel parking. It's endlessly frustrating. How effing emasculating is that?!
