My self-summary
Mark Twain and I agree: “Never refuse to do a kindness unless the act would work great injury to yourself, and never refuse to take a drink - under any circumstances.”

I'm a curious, positive, progressive, and passionate guy. I'm always ready hit the road, try something new, explore some corner of a city I haven't seen before, hike, eat, drink, and just wring a bit more life out of life.
What I’m doing with my life
I work at the Smithsonian, researching American History and putting together books and exhibits on popular culture. I try to resist the urge to take selfies with the Muppets every day.
I’m really good at
cooking elaborate meals
planning trips
inventing holidays
Trivial Pursuit
eating my vegetables
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Movies: Chances are, if we're talking for more than an hour, my inner film nerd will come out. Some of my favorites are The Third Man, Charade, Harvey, Sullivan's Travels, The Thin Man, It's a Wonderful Life, and Harold and Maude. Recently into 60s comedy: The Loved One, The Odd Couple, Cactus Flower, Dr. Strangelove. Want to check something out at the AFI Silver with me?

Books: I've always got a stack of books I'm working on - usually history and classics. I don't get enough fiction, and I'm working on it. Really enjoyed reading some P. G. Wodehouse and Mark Twain deep cuts recently.

TV: Arrested Development, 30 Rock, Mad Men, Broad City, and The Simpsons are pinnacle achievements of American civilization.

Music: Sufjan Stevens, The New Pornographers, Paul Simon, Arcade Fire, Bruce Springsteen, The National, The Tallest Man on Earth, The Byrds, and the great bluegrass, jazz, soul, and obscure 60s rock that pop up up on my Spotify Discover playlist. Let's go record shopping together.

Food: Brussels sprouts, North Carolina barbecue, gambas al ajillo, fresh summer tomatoes, Italian mountain cheeses, roast chicken with lots of sage, kimchi, pan con tomate, bacon-wrapped dates, unagi, and dumplings from Marco and Luca's in Charlottesville.
The six things I could never do without
my bike, camera, cast iron skillet, the smell of woodsmoke, Serious Eats, and a corkscrew
I spend a lot of time thinking about
What I'm going to eat for dinner.
On a typical Friday night I am
Making cocktails and cooking for my friends, heading out on a weekend trip, or finding myself at all of Derek Brown's bars again, somehow.
You should message me if
Your idea of a perfect relationship is something like the sum of Barack and Michelle Obama and Nick and Nora Charles.

Or if, you know, you just want to go grab a drink somewhere and talk about stuff. Like the history of cocktails, what was the best decade for music, or DC's building height limit. All good topics.
