My self-summary
I like the usual Madison things... you know-- roaring fire in the backyard fire pit, excessively hoppy beers, teardrop campers (I renovated a 1947 Modernistic last winter), and unpainted wood trim... I shouldn't go to Mickey's anymore, because the temptation to order 'sexy fries' is too great!

I love the outdoors, everything from gardening to hiking, biking and camping. I enjoy adventures of all kinds, and have been on some great ones - from building houses in El Salvador, surfing in Costa Rica, to bartending in Amsterdam. I also enjoy attending yoga classes once or twice a week, and just spending time with friends in this great city. Lately, I've started playing my banjo again. Is there a guitar or fiddle player out there who wants to try playing Cripple Creek or the Salty Dog Blues with me?
What I’m doing with my life
My brother and I run a successful solar-energy contracting company here in Madison. I have been somewhat absorbed with renewable energy since I was a young kid (I may be the only kid ever inspired by President Carter's "malaise" speech.). My friend and I attempted to entice the progressive rock nation with a solar powered boombox at Lollapalooza concerts in the 1990s...
I’m really good at
Gardening, cooking, kindness, brewing mead, running a small business, foosball. I'm told I'm a pretty good dancer... I don't know about that, but I do enjoy it!
The first things people usually notice about me
People sometimes point out my dimple.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Just finished reading A Brief History of Nearly Everything. I'm currently enjoying The Inheritance of Loss. Some favorites are Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, A Prayer for Owen Meany, The Hundred Secret Senses, Lord of the Rings, The Bell Jar, John Muir - Story of My Boyhood, books about architecture, bridges, solar energy, public transportation and period commercial art.

Clerks, The Graduate, Superbad, Juno, the Harry Potter series, I Heart Huckabee's, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, Oh Brother Where art Thou, Fargo, Miriam's Wedding, Do the Right Thing, Greed, The Blue Angel, lots more I am not thinking of right now. I just watched the recent BBC productions of Bleak House and Little Dorrit. I read the books a long time ago, but these were great adaptations! Caught the last episode of Downton Abbey last night - best British soap ever!

I don't watch much TV, but I enjoyed watching Six Feet Under, Arrested Development and Queer as Folk with former housemates. I do enjoy just about anything on Masterpiece Theater Classics!

Been into Americana like The Great Lake Swimmers, Bon Iver, The Be Good Tanyas, Stomping Radishes and The Pines this past year. Others favorites are Aimee Mann, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Joy Division, Sonic Youth, Old 97s, Son Volt, Camper Van Beethoven, Cracker, Fugazi, Boogie Down Productions, Run DMC, Ministry, Nitzer Ebb, They Might Be Giants, Garbage, Breeders, White Stripes, Nirvana, Minutemen, Johnny Cash and way more 80s music than I care to admit to (even stuff I hated in the 80s).

I love Indian, Middle Eastern and Himalayan Food. I haven't had any Eritrean/Ethiopian food since I lived in Oakland, but I remember loving the veggie platter with five distinctly flavored dishes and delicious Injera bread. Makes me hungry thinking of it! I like Thai, Mexican, Indonesian and Italian food. Homemade food, especially if it contains fresh vegetables from the garden (or local) is great! Lately I have enjoyed experimenting with massaged kale and swiss chard salads.
The six things I could never do without
Friends, family, a bicycle, work I am passionate about, a garden, sunshine. Caffeine should really be on this list...
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Pretty geeky stuff, like 'Unraveling Bolero' on Radiolab. I also think about ways to improve the efficiency of houses and buildings and how we as a society can be more conscious about environmental issues. I sometimes sketch out designs for a hybrid-electric Vespa scooter that would run on wood pellets...
On a typical Friday night I am
Playing pool with friends, hanging-out at the union terrace, canoeing with a flashlight. One of my favorite Friday nights was spent speeding through through little towns and rural mountain splendor of El Salvador in a mini-bus without seat belts (I wish that was more typical).
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I was terribly disappointed to learn that the mid-riot make out couple wasn't actually making out.
