I like to think that I know how to enjoy life. I laugh a lot! I feel that every new friendship or relationship is an opportunity to learn something new and in that process learn more about myself. While I definitely know who I am, I hope that I can still evolve and expand my horizons.
I have been interested in many things. In my early twenties I was fascinated with the way cultural systems function and adapt. I went through a strong social justice phase (which still comes out to play every now and then). But I have always loved everything about film. First and foremost, while I am a reformed "film snob" I do still like to critique the acting, directing, cinematography, and script. However this doesn’t mean I can't enjoy a movie and find myself lost in it's magic. I like to read, especially before bed. I also now have a guilty pleasure of listening to audio books. They are great for public transit, road trips, and for walking around town. And I always enjoy listening to music especially old school jazz (think early Miles and Coltrane), independent Hip-Hop, R&B and Soul (but I pretty much listen to anything except mainstream country and metal).
I enjoy baking and cooking, especially when it is a new recipe or for a special occasion. Unfortunately the daily cooking isn’t always as enjoyable. Foodie is definitely a term that you could apply to me at moments! I really can appreciate fine cooking, a great pairings of ingredients and excellent technique when it comes to food and restaurants. I absolutely love NPR. (reference "things white people like") This is of course ironic considering as a child when my mom used to listen to it in the car I would have given my left arm for her to change it to the local popular radio station. I guess it seeped in some how. Some of my favorite programs are This American Life, The Moth Hour, Snap Judgement, Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me, Radiolab, code switch, but I also love the way they deliver the news and that I always learn something new! I like to dance and enjoy the occasional night out for this purpose. I need my daily walks/runs with my dog and in turn need to have access to nature every once in a while! I used to live in Vermont and sometimes miss living in the woods. Now that I'm here in the bay area I'm finding new little sanctuaries.
I'm really looking to find someone to experience new things with and if that turns into something more serious that would be great! I am not looking for a hook-up or casual relationship. I am looking for someone who is relatively self-aware, a good communicator, and looking to find a life partner. I believe that an ideal couple is one where both individuals feel supported, loved, sexy and that being together allows each person to be the best version of themselves. If you are someone who is fun loving, willing to be adventurous at times and wants to enjoy the process of getting to know one another message me. I love to explore new foods, restaurants and activities. But I am equally comfortable cooking a meal at home curling up on the coach and watching a movie! I'm not much of a drinker because alcohol seems to have a grudge against my body, but I do like to go out mingle, dance and have a good time. I am also looking for someone who can hold the complexity of life with me. If you feel that you are open, fun, caring, curious about the world, and have a great sense of humor please contact me. I hope that gives you a better sense of who I am (not that one can sum that up in a profile)!
Books: mostly fiction, but I enjoy a good memoir from time to time! The following are from a while ago: "The Alchemist", "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close", "People of the Book", "Foreskin's Lament", "When You Are Engulfed in Flames" by David Sedaris, "Interpreter of Maladies" by Jhumpa Lahiri, "Middlesex" by Jeffery Eugenides. Anything John Irving. Always looking for good recommendations!
Movies: I like them all really. I definitely prefer the artsy or independent films but I love comedies (like the Judd Apatow stuff), romantic comedies, dramas and thrillers! I also have become a tv watcher, because there are some fantastic series being produced! I do like a wide range of stuff though such as arrested development, the wire, most of what AMC is showing, a handful from HBO & Showtime, 30 Rock, Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, The Mindy project, True Detectives (1st season), The Americans, Orphan Black, Mr. Robot to name a few.
Music: If you listened to my streaming apps you would usually hear and odd mixture of hip-hop, old standards, 80ies and 90ies music, and some contemporary indie bands. That said I like old school Jazz, independent Hip-Hop (A Tribe Called Quest is my all time favorite!), R&B, Soul, Old Standards by Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone. Stevie Wonderand Louie Armstrong always bring a smile to my face! I really like most anything, but most country music I find grating and I'm not a fan of metal or electronic.
Food: I love Etheopian, Indian, Sushi, Thai, Mexican, Pho, and seafood for starters. I'm always up for trying new things. Fresh seasonal produce is a true treat!
