My self-summary
Hi! How are you? Come in, have a seat, but give me a hug first--I like hugs. You want to know about me? Well, okay, but you have to promise to tell me about you next.

Upfront disclaimer: I have a boyfriend, PFPorty. We're polyamorous, though I'm not actively seeking new partners. But if someone awesome happens to cross my path, I'm open to the idea. Also, I can go months between logins to this site... So if I don't reply to a message, I probably just haven't logged in. Or if I have, it's been so long I've assumed you have moved on and so I don't reply. The boy checks his OkC messages regularly, though. Contacting him might get to me faster, oddly enough.

I'm a hippie chick (in ideology, anyway) who escaped ultra-conservative Bible-belt Georgia by running away to school just outside of DC. I am an artist with a strong background in music (classical and folk, primarily), but I mostly express myself through writing and the visual arts nowadays, especially micrography. I have my first solo gallery show coming up in May, which I'm super-stoked about!

I've also become mildly obsessed with ballroom dancing/latin dancing. I was on my university's competition team, and it's crazy amounts of fun.

I am an optimist and a modern version of a hippie: liberal, pacifist, independent, creative, chill in attitude but always full of mental energy. Granted, I must admit that "hippie" was merely one of those nicknames the kids back in the South tried to insult me with when I'd express non-right-wing views, so I took it and ran with it. Having a strong opinion on anything and everything is one of my specialties, but I always love listening to the other side or a different take on the same. I can debate just about anything. I'm pretty good at that.

I strongly believe that life is out there to be enjoyed, so I want to make sure I do just that. Love transcends gender, and my bisexuality is an extension of that belief (aside from the fact that I think both boys and girls are pretty, as well as those in between). I sometimes prefer to call myself queer now, though, rather than bi. I identify as polyamorous, but have no issue with monogamy--it's just not an absolute requirement for my relationships. I've had monogamous and poly relationships and both types have been beautiful and fulfilling in their own ways.

I used to be into a whole lot of political activism... but then I worked on Capitol Hill for a while after I finished college, so now I'm a little politicked-out, but I may get back to it eventually.

I am pretty religious... but in a liberal Reform way. I am studying in a Reform seminary, after all.
What I’m doing with my life
I went to college near DC, at UMD, and got a degree in Jewish studies and LGBT studies, and a minor in creative writing. Woohoo.

Then I bartended until I got a job working for two nonprofits on Capitol Hill.

Then I started graduate school in 2010. I go to the Reform movement's seminary; I was in Jerusalem for a year, and now I'm in LA for the next few years. I finished a Certificate in Nonprofit Management, I'm almost done with a Masters in Jewish Education, and then the plan is to be ordained as a rabbi. I also want to train to be a soferet (scribe for Jewish religious texts, such as the mezuzah and Torah). If you know of anyone willing to train a woman, PLEASE let me know! I've had several potential teachers withdraw due to pressure from the Orthodox community... I love internal Jewish politics. Sigh.
I’m really good at
Writing, guitar, singing, public speaking, debating/arguing, flirting, multimedia painting, cooking delicious vegetarian meals that even non-veggies seem to enjoy, forgetting birthdays and anniversaries (seriously, please don't judge me!), faking a Southern accent, being political, being overly opinionated even on things that get me in trouble sometimes, and playing wingwoman. I'm quite proud of my wingwoman skills.

I also bartended for a long time, so I can mix a mean cocktail. Or a nice cocktail. Or a sweet one. Or a bitter one. Or creamy. Whatever you prefer, I can make it. I'm pretty good at that.

And art! I'm good at that. Or so the gallery owners tell me, at least.
The first things people usually notice about me
My height (I'm short. Very short. But it makes me cute, I promise!), curviness, my political views (I'm very loud about it, after being one of the few liberals where I grew up), my randomness, my ability to argue any point well, my glasses when I'm wearing them and my eye color when I'm wearing contacts, the way I smell... And as of January 2012, copper hair. Like a dark penny. Or so I'm told.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: Middlesex, 1984, The Handmaid's Tale, Brave New World, We, Catch-22, The Awakening, Kushiel's Legacy series, Tom Robbins, and anything (and I do mean anything) by Heinlein or Asimov. I'm mildly obsessed with dystopian literature... and I may or may not have just made a gross understatement.

Movies: Waking Life, The Butterly Effect, Kinsey, Saved, Shrek, Swing Kids, Shall We Dance, אדמה משוגעת (American title: "Sweet Mud," but literal translation is "Crazy Earth"). I love Israeli film and I have a deep fondness for documentaries and small-budget films.

Music: Great Big Sea, Natasha Bedingfield, Explosions in the Sky, Guster, Ben Folds, Simon & Garfunkel, Beatles, Billy Joel, disco, anything ballroom-y, Latin-y, or swing-y that I can dance to.

Foods: sushi and Indian. mmm. I cook a lot of Indian-spiced foods... But really, as for food, if it doesn't have meat in it and it's spicy, I can almost guarantee I'll like it. I like my food to bite back. It's only fair.

I used to be vegetarian, but a bunch of food allergies make that nearly impossible now, so I just minimize my meat intake. Unfortunately, many of the foods I'm allergic to are (a) delicious and/or (b) in EVERYTHING (soy oil), so I can be difficult to feed these days.
Six things I could never do without
1) Art
2) Books
3) The Internet
4) Writing
5) Friends
6) My kitten! She's adorable. Her name is Zuli. Zuli had a sister named Leilee, but Leilee moved away with my former roommate, BaileysBelle. Their names are short for "Lapis Lazuli" and "Lorelei Lee." Heinlein fans will get it. Yes, they cause just as much mischief as their namesakes...
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Political stuff, the next short story I'm gonna write, the next kippah or micrography piece I'm going to design, philosophical secular and religious stuff, what my plans are for the next day because I'm horrible about writing them down, what to explore next in this city, sex, but if that's the main tidbit that sparked your interest, then probably not with you.

Also, art. I'm in a gallery now, recently wrapped up a big solo show, and get several commissions a year, so that keeps me busy. Y'know, in what little time is left after my 6 classes, 3 jobs, and a few hours of sleep every once in a while... You can always check out my stuff on my website, if you're interested: http://www.RaeAnDesigns.com/
On a typical Friday night I am
Being Jewish, then either out with a friend, in with the boyfriend, or just in by myself and a book, a glass of wine (or tea), my super-awesome cow slippers, and a good film courtesy of Netflix. Or Star Trek. Star Trek usually wins.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Pah on secrets. I have no inhibitions. I laugh at all who are slave to inhibitions. They're silly. Ask anything. I'll probably answer. And if I don't, it's for dramatic or artistic effect.

Although I will admit to being a bit of a grammarophile. I like grammar. It fascinates me. And I'm a total bibliophile. I love books. A lot. Also, intellect is a huge turn-on. So, this paragraph just tells you that I'm a dork.

Okay, one thing I *actually* won't admit often: if you chew with your mouth open, you almost certainly won't get a second date out of me. (I'm a bit ashamed of that neuroticism.. but it's there and I can't seem to get rid of it. :( ) There, you have a juicy tidbit as a reward for making it this far down my profile. Bravo.
You should message me if
You're fun to talk to, creative, a
leftist/liberal/socialist/anything left of center whatsoever, if you like music and art a lot, or you like dancing or writing or talking about religious philosophy... though I enjoy talking to anyone, so don't hold back. Just message me or something. Though I may not log in for another four months, so if you miss me in my sporadic visits... Sorry. :-/

Or... hell, this is a long-ass profile. If you made it all the way to the end, I want to hear from you just to say congrats on your superior attention span if nothing else.
