I don't sound like your other friends. I don't act like your other friends. I'm a little different, a little mysterious, and a little awesome.
You know that friend you have? The kinda shy one that will sometimes surprise you with some hidden talent, some outburst of extroversion, something that makes you say, "Whoa. That kid's a lot more than meets the eye."
I am not a robot from Cybertron. Why do you ask?
trying to treat things that aren't puzzles like puzzles
TV: Cancelled my cable subscription last year, haven't looked back. Other than Survivor, there's no broadcast television I follow regularly. I did watch some of House of Cards and enjoyed that, as well as BoJack Horseman.
MUSIC: This is the big one for me. 90s alt rock, Motown, 80s punk, 2000s emo, house and trance today... my tastes are all over the charts. I keep a playlist on Spotify at http://open.spotify.com/user/jamesfnx/playlist/4ich4CxvJlp39lt6Q3nPhX that I'm regularly updating and soliciting new ideas to broaden my musical horizons. My favorite live act so far has been Say Anything- a really energetic, passionate set with songs that are sarcastic and snarky while also being introspective on personal growth and faith and all sorts of things you don't expect to hear from a post-punk band.
Also, if you know what Silver Scrapes is, we're probably gonna make awesome friends.
MOVIES: I'm a sucker for smart comedies. Wes Anderson, Christopher Guest, Harold Ramis, that sort of thing. I also dig documentaries (Seriously, Jiro Dreams of Sushi and Blackfish are on Netflix. Go watch em!) and tend to shy away from gorefests like Saw.
FOOD: I grew up as a picky eater and I'm slowly trying to break my habits. It's hard to do. I'll try new things slowly, and my face might scrunch up (which is pretty funny when it happens.) I've been a meat and potatoes guy most of my life.
Passport. I've gotten to go to Europe twice and the Caribbean once (and hopefully going again next spring!) and getting out and seeing the world with purpose is important to me.
Car. Seeing the world also includes the world by road. Last year I took a two week trip through central Oregon, Northern California, and Nevada and this year I went through much of Western Oregon. I wanna take extended road trips every year. There's nothing better than the open road to think about and appreciate the world.
Friends. I wouldn't be the person I am without a lot of help from the friends I've made over the past few years. I was the son and heir of a shyness that is criminally vulgar. I'm still often a bit withdrawn and shy, but nowhere near the point I was. I hope I can make new friends and that you can too in my circles!
Puzzles and games. I've been playing games of one sort or another almost my entire life, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. I would love to meet someone who had the same passion for games (card, board, video, social) as I do.
Humor. Beyond the cliche "I love to laugh" (who doesn't), I'm never going to take everything in the world totally seriously. I get through my days with jokes, one-liners, wit, and snark.
why America is so good at things Americans care about and so bad at things the rest of the world cares about?
how a book of 40 single-chapter mini biographies of people who've affected my life would be a lot more interesting than a 40 chapter biography about one of them.
