My self-summary
I am inquisitive and enjoy lively discussion, especially about more abstract topics. I like participating in open discussions as well as having deep conversations one on one.

I am generally more open and honest than particularly polite. I am hard to read and it can take people a while to figure out what I am like. I am attentive to the people I am close to.

I like reading, e.g. Terry Pratchett or Jane Austen. I enjoy writing also, but I do not actually indulge in it that often. I enjoy music. I like playing strategic board games, especially shogi.

Politically I am a left-wing liberal, but I care much more for actual pragmatic solutions to causes I consider important and conveying understanding why particular values are to be preferred than political parties or speculative discussions about politics.

I am contemplative, intellectual, and imaginative.
What I’m doing with my life
I have recently lived a comparatively quiet life with my beloved wife FrauHolle. (She died in May 2017.) I was born in The Hague and lived in the suburbs for decades, but have lived in smaller communities in greener areas in recent years.

I am an IT professional. I typically go to the office about twice a week and work from home the rest of the time. A substantial part of my work is internationally oriented, across time zones. It is not uncommon for me to have both early and late conference calls and go shopping etc. in between. My current job contains elements of planning, coordination and management as well as very deep technical skills.

I try to play at the Dutch Shogi Championships every year, and one or two more tournaments. I also like to play more general board game sessions with friends.
I’m really good at
I studied mathematics and computer science and I have a very logical mind. I am also very interested in language. I am good at long and complex discussions in e-mail or some forum or mailing list on the internet.

I am a good listener. I make a point of stimulating open-mindedness as well as responsibility. People who know me find it comparatively easy to confide in me.
The first things people usually notice about me
I am fairly hard to read. I have long hair.

I tend to look at things critically. I take my own point of view with a grain of salt.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books - Terry Pratchett "Small gods", Jane Austen "Emily", Louis Couperus, James Patrick Kelly "Wildlife", Greg Egan "Diaspora", George Orwell "1984". Or in other words, primarily fantasy, science fiction, and literature. I read non-fiction also.

Movies - I tend to prefer slower-moving films or as a friend puts it 'those arthouse films in which nothing happens'--but anything that really makes you think will work. Some better-known movies I really like: Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, Abre los ojos, Twelve monkeys, Rashomon.

Music - I enjoy listening to many genres; most of my music collection is metal. Favorites include Dark Tranquillity "The gallery", Skyclad "A burnt offering for the bone idol", Queensrÿche "Rage for order", and Kari Rueslatten (esp. as the singer for The 3rd and The Mortal "Tears laid in earth"). I occasionally still listen to Duran Duran or Depeche Mode.

Food - Indian, Greek, Chinese (esp. Cantonese).
Six things I could never do without
communication, introspection, pattern recognition, self-expression, companionship, quiet
I spend a lot of time thinking about
philosophy, psychology, spirituality, the abstract, community

I have a distinct idealistic side and keep thinking about ways to improve. I think that, beyond the obvious, what change is positive is strongly tied to culture and often also bound to a certain social group or stratum, and that an outsider cannot generally hope to figure this out.

I am an advocate for free, open, and honest communication. Anything that is enjoyable and not a threat to other commitments (or general humanity) that you can do with a clear conscience is allowable in principle and negotiable from my perspective.
On a typical Friday night I am
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I do not use nicknames or screen names, only various abbreviations of my real name. I assume that people who know me might recognize me. Consequently, I am somewhat careful with what I write publicly.
You should message me if
you think we would have something to say to each other. I love discussion and learning new things.

I strongly value openness and honesty. Relationships require good communication, especially poly ones.

Long-distance relationships have their own limitations.
