My self-summary
Curious, politically engaged, sensitive yet sometimes irreverent, I am a man of large thoughts but simple tastes. In some ways, I am child-like in my appreciation of small things (I smell flowers, I'm curious about what plants grow in my backyard, I enjoy hearing stories told by children) yet I also engage with political issues of identity, justice, and culture.
I have a humorous and somewhat sarcastic side that I think brings me down to Earth and helps me connect with people from all walks of life. If you are a conversation artist and can dance wittily from one idea to the next without pause, all the while bringing in some raucous, off-the-cuff jokes, I will respond with frank enthusiasm--guaranteed!
What I’m doing with my life
Social science research, environmental education and public advocacy for sustainable cultures at the professional level, but the practical aspects are somewhat on pause as I finish grad school. I have few other hobbies and interests, but why ruin the surprise?
I’m really good at
Listening, but not always remembering.
Pushing forward in spite of adversity.
Remembering humility in the face of pride or ego.
Believing in the goodness of people in spite of their shit.
Having private moments of self-understanding and self-overcoming while doing intense physical exercise like yoga or cycling.
I can be good at explaining things to people. I'm good at languages, I tend to pick them up very well.
Not holding my tongue when a subject piques my interest.
The first things people usually notice about me
my voice
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
music: Bonobo, Ethiopian jazz, quantic, radiohead, drum and bass, Salif Keita, mos def, and much more.
books: all sorts of great literature, from herman hesse to vs naipaul and jose saramago. critical theory, continental philosophy, critical analysis of current events and environmental issues; fantasy and sci-fi are old favourites.
I love indian food, mexican food, peruvian food (particularly the soups, ceviche a bit less so), ethiopian and italian food. Spanish tapas are wonderful, too.
Six things I could never do without
my bike
a good cup of coffee
the ocean
I spend a lot of time thinking about
how to take the joke to the next level
why neighbours don't want to recycle
how great the city would be with fewer cars and more public transit.
On a typical Friday night I am
Merrymaking with friends and comrades, discussing intensely political issues, re-enacting scenes from our daily lives, and/or cracking silly jokes. Sometimes at a dance party, live music, networking cocktail, or academic or political conference. And yes, I sometimes do Netflix and chill, but I prefer to keep that minimal.
You should message me if
I have gotten smoother with age, though I still can get bored and require someone who is my match intellectually if we are going to go the long haul. That said, I'm not looking for the love of my life here, just someone who I can be excited to see once or twice a week, and share bodies and minds in ways that leave us feeling infused creatively and more excited about life.
Another that said: sometimes we just don't click--I've met some friends here and look forward to meeting more.
