I am a naturally active, happy guy who loves puns, squirt guns and outdoor adventures. I am an independent intellectual and a non-judgemental atheist. My tastes range from good opera to hole in the wall restaurants. I am a good, creative cook and love picnics. Sailing, the tropics and travel are central to my life.
I am looking for a partner in life who is insatiably curious, kind, passionate and sensual - One who wants me as I do her; together, live our dreams and take that daily care that's needed to keep our love strong.
I have written two tests: The Sailing Compatibility Test and the Are You An Adventurous Woman Test. Try them - You may like them and you just might find the results interesting! If you go to the bottom (literally) of my journal, you'll find a companion article to my Sailing Compatibility Test on how to start sailing on a shoestring, have a great time, avoid common problems and get connected to a local sailing community.
"May the sun shine kindly on your face and the warm wind at your back not be your own." - Ed Koepsel
"Wish I said that." "But you will, Oscar, you will." - Monty Python parody of Oscar Wilde/Bernard Shaw conversation.
I am enthusiastic, com&passionate, and playful
While working towards my long-term goal of cruising and documenting the tropics, I am focusing on a balanced life and things that make me happy.
In addition to long-term cruising, I have some seriously cool short and medium-term adventures I'll tell you about over coffee.
I regularly enjoy sailing, diving, picnics, museums, ski trips, hikes and stargazing, as well as walks on the beach and to no place in particular. I am am in shape and working, of course. Good work, though - I'm a boat captain :-)
Carrying stuff - Packs, groceries, trash, scuba gear and (most) girls before tossing them on a bed. I enjoy chivalry and often tell a manager how well I have been treated by someone.
Outdoor sports (skiing (downhill, cross-country and water), cycling (Wanna go for a pleasant ride?), water sports), computer art (I have stuff on permanent display in a museum - Ooh, aah!), fine woodworking and teaching. I get a kick out of seeing someone gain insights and am a very good listener.
Books: A Canticle For Leibowitz, Walter M. Miller, Jr. (Probably the best-written I have read.); Tales of a Shaman's Apprentice, Mark J. Plotkin; A Fish Caught in Time, Samantha Weinberg; Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton, Edward Rice; K2-The Savage Mountain, Charles S. Houston and Robert H. Bates; The Forever War, Joe Haldeman; Lazy B, Sandra Day O'Connor; In A Sunburned Country, Bill Bryson.
Movies: The Seven Samurai, Akira Kurosawa; Augirre, The Wrath of God, Warner Herzog; The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Phil Kaufman; Snatch, Guy Ritchie; Bladerunner, Ridley Scott; The Last of the Mohicans, Daniel Day Lewis; Men In Black, Barry Sonnenfeld; Pride and Prejudice, Simon Langton; Young Frankenstein, Mel Brooks and Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Monty Python.
Music: Too many artists to mention - Usually early new wave, fusion and straight ahead jazz, latin (I'm a sucker for flamenco guitar.) and 70s rock. In addition, good opera, D'Oily Carte, much that's classical, good blues, some punk/grunge, very little rap (nothing negative) and absolutely nothing country or religious.
Foods: I like many ethnic foods but am, unfortunately, American in that I won't eat most organs, unidentifiable slimy things, kava (the horror, the horror) or monkey.
Draped over the bow, drinking our first coffee at dawn, with
dolphins cavorting, splashing our dangling feet.
Lying on the sand together while snorkeling in absolutely
clear water in a large hole in a beautiful coral reef; several
schools of hundreds of small, brightly colored fish swimming above,
tumbled together by a breaking swell, the sun glinting off their
colors, reforming into their separate schools for it to happen all
over again over us; blowing air rings through the fish, laughing
and kissing with each dive until we have to break for air.
Swooping down a steep bowl with deep, fluffy, really light
powder; that delicious pressure through the turn, sinking deep with
it building on my chest 'till the snow packs the goggles, when
suddenly it's off and the sun's bright and I'm launched flying,
making perfect, huge 8's with my partner's track, just a turn
behind, flying through her powder trail - a sparkling, rainbow veil
in the air.
Sailing downwind on a hot day with that very slow rocking and
thrust as each swell passes under the boat, a gentle breeze, the
huge, colorful gennaker (sail) up and breathing with each swell,
naked with a pretty girl, sliced juicy ripe fruit, cold wine and
fruity rum drinks and smiling contentment oozing from every
Lying in zipped-together sleeping bags in a desert, with a red
flashlight, star chart and astronomy book, looking at shooting
stars and that inky deep purple-blue with that profusion of stars
you only see away from the sky glow, fragrant woodsmoke from the
campfire lightly permeating everything and lots of oohs and aahs
and slow, delicious making out.
Sailing fast upwind, with drinks and snacks served, guests new to sailing so excited at it all, when a tuna hits the lure and the reel is screaming out, the heavy trolling pole is bent right over and we have to reduce sail NOW to land the fish and the wasabe's behind the spices, not in the fridge and everyone's laughing and babbling at it all, so wonderfully unexpected.
You like these kinds of active adventures, are sensual, playful, kind, naturally happy and laugh easily. Bonus for wanderlust, tropical and ocean cravings. Super Bonus for active personality. Although I do like lazy days, I am incompatible with couch potatoes and can't abide drugs, addictions or people playing mind games or being fake.
I am looking for:
- A partner for my lifelong travel adventures. If not, then
- Some fun dates (Isn't that how it all starts?) or a partner for my next big trip. And always
- Sailing friends and
