My self-summary
Life trajectory: MN -> RI -> MA -> CA, and my feelings about that are CA > MA > RI > MN. The Gallup poll folk seem to think I have no variance not accounted for by the following: single, no dependents, highly likely to vote, not religiously affiliated, never shop at Walmart, and do not "consider myself a NASCAR fan." What Gallup probably doesn't realize, however, is that I'm also impressively bad at jumping rope.

Love love love love music, language, tall buildings, interesting cocktails, and elegant graphs.

Seized by the brash/optimistic notion that I'm more fun than this profile makes me sound.

Especially on the lookout for scruffy polyglot nerds with high emotional IQs. If you know any, please send them my way.
What I’m doing with my life
• sciencing data
• using bullet points
• learning cello and discovering it's hard to teach an old dog new clefs
• playing with magnets
• studying too many languages at once to get any good at any of them
• pretending on the treadmill to be a robot sent back through time to save humanity's future
I’m really good at
I used to have great Chinese pronunciation... but my vocab has gone from micro to nano, so my wonderful accent gets me nowhere.
The first things people usually notice about me
Context is everything, isn't it?

Mostly: good posture
Sometimes: tweed
Rarely: not a cyclops

In my daydreams: rugged forearms
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
(a) Cat's Cradle, other Vonnegut, Catch 22, Rabbit Run, The Plague, The Road, Eat Drink and be Healthy, Ecotopia, Word Freak, The Superorganism, Ezra Klein's and Paul Krugman's blogs.

(b) Hable con ella (Talk to Her), Lola rennt (Run Lola Run), Eternal Sunshine, 2001, Empire Strikes Back, Donnie Darko, 12 Monkeys, Bring It On, Grosse Pointe Blank, The Shining, I Accuse My Parents, Children Of Men, Terminator 2, Aliens, Ghostbusters. Generally speaking, anything with dystopiae, apocalypses, robots, spooks, musicians, or multilingual dialogue gets extra points. If anyone wants to hash out a screenplay combining all those elements at once, drop me a line.

(c) Veep, Early-to-mid 90s Simpsons, Childrens Hospital, 30 Rock, Portlandia, Sarah Silverman Program, Arrested Development, Daria, Project Runway, Broad City (obviously), The Americans

(d) Bach, Stravinsky (those two are my desert island composers), Mahler, Shostakovich, Brahms, Bartók, Prokofiev, Ligeti, Josquin, Mozart, Gesualdo, Crumb, Barber, Villa-Lobos, Piazzolla, Schoenberg, Webern, Beck, Imogen Heap, Brian Eno, early Tori Amos, Sufjan Stevens, Tool, Sigur Rós, Massive Attack, Iron & Wine, Radiohead, Björk, Ella & Etta. Here's a fun mashup* of my musical tastes.

Update: Wow, how was Beethoven not on this list? I'm definitely not too cool for Beethoven. I'm all about Eroica these days.

(e) Super foods, richly-pigmented vegetables, quinoa, Zinfandel, scotch & bourbon, very dark chocolate (>80%, please), broccoli, berries... nothing with a nervous system--I get enough of that at work.

The six things I could never do without
Stereo with decent speakers, an instrument of some kind, a bike that works or is fixable with simple tools, simple tools, adequate warmth, dictionaries.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
probability, politics, and ants.
On a typical Friday night I am
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I like the song "Unsent" by Alanis Morissette.
You should message me if
