My self-summary
I'm just Riv. Nickname I've used for ages. Poly, kinky, nerdy.

I'm an engineer, and all that implies. I am methodical. I have plans, and I don't like to deviate from those. I do like meeting people. I like questions, puzzles, and trying to figure things out. I don't just jump in, but I like to get a feel for a situation.

I am fairly well rounded, and I have had a decent amount of experience with a lot of situations. I can have conversations about anything from politics to art to theoretical physics. I can build things. I can take things apart, and usually get them back together. I pay attention to details. I can grill, but otherwise I am a pretty terrible cook.

I am a blacksmith. There is nothing quite like forcing metal into a shape of your choosing to make you feel better. I do not do this as much now as I used to, as my landlord will not permit it at my current place, but I do keep up with it. I like making knives, which I’ve gotten fairly good at. I also like making little decorative things. Copper roses are almost always a big hit with people, and I don’t need the whole forge to make them.

I attempt to play golf. I say attempt here because I really am not good at it. It’s not a terrible pastime, and it allows me to goof off with my dad. Also, when walking it is not bad exercise, especially when you use as much of the course as we do. I also know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but if you do play golf, I won’t say no to a round.

I also do photography. I actually have a profile up on Model Mayhem. I am not a professional, but I do try to shoot somewhat seriously. I do have a decent set of equipment, but I don’t have a real studio. It’s a fun hobby, and it allows me to meet interesting people.

And this bleeding thing is telling me I need to hit 500 words on here, so you all get to hear me ramble on a little bit. I really don't think there is any way that a space like this will substitute for an actual meeting and conversation. In addition, most people write with a different vocabulary than when they are speaking, and I am no exception. I had to seriously work to not fall into my technical writing mode while filling this out. That would have made this whole thing very boring. The important part of this is that first paragraph above. And, as long as 500 words may be, it is still way too short to get a good feel for a person.

So, this is the quick and dirty version of me. If you want to know more, message me. I’ll pretty much answer any question there. Meeting for coffee is another good option. I’m pretty straight forward, and will do my best to answer any questions you have for me.

I am tall, different, and an engineer, and I will be at dragoncon.
What I’m doing with my life
I am currently a hydraulic engineer working for a company that makes after market add on kits for mobile hydraulic machinery like excavators and backhoes. I am a design engineer for them.

Unfortunately I don't currently have a whole mess of hobbies. I have a small kid, an I do that rather than what all I used to do. When I can get away, though, I enjoy making things. I will knit, blacksmith, woodwork, work on some home robotics designs, brew beer, or otherwise try to build something.
I’m really good at
Designing interesting items. Being an engineer really isn't just a job. You look at the world in a different way. I think about structural mechanics, fluid dynamics, and materials every time I look at something. That makes me fairly decent at designing things, or improving existing designs. I also am pretty good at playing with electricity.
The first things people usually notice about me
Right now its the Dr. Who scarf. It's somewhat longer than 17' long and bright enough to make people look. And I am damn proud of it (it took a lot of work to make). After that my height. I'm 6'3", and I often am wearing a kilt, even in coldish weather, which is probably close to being the first thing.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Way to varied to fit here. I like many things.

Books: I read mainly scifi/fantasy, but I have a decent non-fiction collection, and I also read technical writing. It's amazing how much more interesting journals get after you've been published in them. I read not only to keep up with the leading edge of research, but also to see how my publications stack up against what else is out there.

Music: damn near anything. I do not normally listen to rap or country much, but I do like a decent amount of those genres as well. Recently, the pandora station has been Finnish death-folk like Korpiklaani and Turisas.

Movies: I like movies that have really engaging plots, or that have no plot at all. Sometimes I want to watch something that I'll think about for days, and sometimes I want to turn my brain off and watch things explode for an hour and a half.
Six things I could never do without
books, internet connection, people, hot water, friends, stuff to do
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Getting a better job
Vector fields
What to do tomorrow
Do I want a masters or doctorate?
On a typical Friday night I am
Recuperating from the week in some fashion. Hanging out with friends, seeing a show, relaxing with my daughter, and just generally trying to forget about the last week at work.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
That I will answer any questions, just not always in public forum.
You should message me if
You want to have a conversation. You'd like to build something.

I may not respond instantly, but I will answer.
