My self-summary
Moving to the bay area in June 2016. Until then, I'm even more short on time than usual. I'm generally interested in meeting fun, interesting, new friends. Not looking to jump into anything right away, but happy to see where things go.

I am a big fan of okcupid*, I've met some great folks here and I'm hoping to make some more good friends. In case you ladies and straight guys are wondering why I'm browsing your profile, I'll redirect you to that word above: friends. =)

This is also where I met my longest running boyfriend of all time. We're no longer together, but it was a great experience. I prefer show over tell, unusual over normal, quiet over loud, curiousity over certainty, flexibility over organization, and cooperation over conflict. One of my many, much loved ex-roommates frequently said I was very goal-oriented. He was trying to make fun of me, but I mostly took it as a compliment.

If you wonder why in the world I'm checking out your profile from half a continent or more away, I'm probably just being friendly and browsing in interesting places, but I may be plotting out a trip to somewhere near you. I like traveling and meeting new people. I also like to travel to visit friends I don't see often enough. Once or twice, I've also ventured to places where I don't speak the local language. I'd like to do more of that, though I always feel like I should learn the language first.

I want to know more things than it is practical to know in one lifetime, especially a lifetime with sleep and fun pastimes. Sadly, I do not believe in reincarnation, because that would help.

I get along best in small groups, and my favorite times with significant others involve hanging out together with a solid group of friends.

I am earnest, open, and affectionate

* = Though I really do wish okcupid would quit diluting their character. I really liked "stalkers", it showed a sense of humor that "visitors" elides, though I can also see the potential for trauma to the easily traumatized.
What I’m doing with my life
Figuring out what I want to do with my life if and when I grow up. I slowed down to a more sedate rate of change for about a decade but have recently changed relationships and jobs rather rapidly with plans to change my home as well.
I’m really good at
At work, they say it's collaborating with others and thinking critically. Hmm, that fits in life too, I think. Really, I feel like I'm pretty good at a lot of things but maybe not really good at any one thing; if I had to pick one thing that I'm really good at, I'd say it's explaining complex technical ideas to people who don't usually get that kind of stuff. Another talent of mine is diplomacy. My past breakups have usually been understated, low drama affairs. I generally feel positively about everyone I've dated, and I intend to keep it that way.
The first things people usually notice about me
The most consistent thing people say they notice first is an impression of intelligence. Of course, many have advised me not to mention being smart. But it's apparently the first thing everyone notices about me. I'm not sure why. Do I use big words? Is it how I analyze the simplest of things? It's definitely not my intimate awareness of pop culture or sports trivia (because I really don't have those). My overeducation? My propensity to fix things (after breaking them)? The board games? The quotes from sci fi, fantasy, mythology, and occasionally shakespeare? Beats me. See, not so smart.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: Guns, Germs, and Steel; Multiple Intelligences; Omnivore's Dilemma; Lots of sci fi & fantasy by Dave Duncan, Octavia Butler (RIP), Lois McMaster Bujold, George R R Martin, and Neil Gaiman; the Prydain Chronicles;

Video Games (they didn't ask, but it belongs here): Currently, Disgaea; Historically: World of Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo 2, (Blizzard basically has owned several years of my attention) Mass Effect, Dragon Age (Bioware does good work), Final Fantasy series (though they fell off a cliff at some point), Zelda, Ultima, Civilization, Master of Orion 2, Master of Magic, Alpha Centauri.

Board/Card Games: Race for the Galaxy, Agricola, Le Havre, Puerto Rico (despite the embedded racism), Mu, Tichu, Caylus, Das zepter von zavandor, and more...

Foods: Thai, Ethiopian, Cal-Mex, Indian, Vietnamese, other (just so long as it's vegetarian, and I can exclude peppers; stupid digestive issues)

Movies: The Corporation; Fellowship of the Ring; Fried Green Tomatoes; X-men; The Matrix (and none of the sequels); American Beauty;

Music: Recently discovered pop-punk, New Found Glory, Fallout Boy, Something corporate, Yellowcard, but also Les Miserables, Rent, Death Cab for Cutie/The Postal Service, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Vertical Horizon, some folk, Enya, Tori Amos, Avril Lavigne, Dixie Chicks, Indigo Girls, R Carlos Nakai (Native American Flute). There's more, of course, I'm usually willing to listen to most things, and then they start growing on me. Pandora says I like subtle use of harmony and an emphasis on vocals.

(well, this is a good start anyway)
Six things I could never do without
I'm reframing this question to make it more interesting: I won't talk about the stuff I really need (food, water, shelter, sleep, community, etc) or the stuff that everyone likes (peace, freedom, economic security), but stuff I really like that makes me who I am, I'll give it a go.

1) Interesting ideas to ponder and play with
2) Goals
3) rules or norms to break quietly and peacefully for the greater good
4) Nerd toys
5) People to bounce ideas off of
6) People to hug (better if they're the same people as for number 5)
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Big picture things, environmental quality, educational practices, transportation systems, healthcare policy, building practices, the future, and, conversely, detailed analytical problems.

And food. Food is tasty.

And video games. They are fun.
On a typical Friday night I am
At home, surfing the web, saving the world from the next greatest threat a video game designer cooked up, writing, reading, cooking, cleaning (okay, maybe not so much this one), hanging out with friends. It varies, but it doesn't typically involve going to some noisy crowded place nor does it typically involve drinking much.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Though we are no longer together, deaplatypus is still a great guy. You should meet him.

I really hate negative bits in profiles and as such removed my little rant against guys who don't want to interact with men here, but label themselves bi anyway. The people who needed to see it probably weren't reading it, and it probably offended innocents who read it. Bad me, please forgive if you were among the offended.
You should message me if
You want to do outdoorsy things with me; you want to do nerdy things with me; you want to chat about important topics; you enjoy low key activities; you recognize that social connections are the key to happiness; you genuinely care about others and want to do what is right, not because someone or something told you it is right, but because you believe it is right and can explain why.
The two of us
