My self-summary
I'm a native midwesterner who is constantly coming to grips with Texas and Austin leisure culture. About once a year I think I'm going through my quarter-life crisis, but always realize that I'm just bored and haven't been exercising. Most of the time, though, I'm enthusiastic, interested, and amusing. I like to go out and to stay in, but don't we all? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
What I’m doing with my life
I'm a graduate student at UT. I study Renaissance literature, although I don't feel like a "Renaissance literature person," since I don't much care for Shakespeare in Love. I also teach undergraduate composition; don't message me if you're in my class. I still wrestle with the big-picture relevance of life within the university, and try to volunteer or otherwise make myself useful in the world. Other than that I'm JUST DOING THE BEST I CAN OKAY?

Oh I also write a column about grammar for The American Reader, it's supposed to be funny and sometimes is: http://theamericanreader.com/author/michael-roberts/
I’m really good at
Super Mario Brothers, making (and drinking) cocktails, crossword puzzles. I'm not a good dancer but I dance as if I were. I think I'd be a pretty solid Jeopardy contestant, too.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I study Shakespeare, but In Search of Lost Time is the only book that ever "changed my life" (but maybe not for the better). I also really like Grace Paley, George Saunders, and Lydia Davis. Oh and how did I forget Joan Didion here? Well now I haven't!

I'm a sucker for old French movies and film noir, but also love horror movies both good and bad. I also think that Pixar has brought about a real golden age for children's movies (I can barely handle Up). In the Mood for Love, The Red Shoes, and Fanny and Alexander are my absolute faves.

I really like the Modern Lovers, the Cure, Jens Lekman, and Belle and Sebastian. I also like dance music of all kinds when I'm out drinking and dancing. I've been through the requisite punk, folk, and house phases and like to revisit them occasionally.
Six things I could never do without
background music.
(good) sushi.
champagne breakfasts.
crossword puzzles.
my cat of course.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Would you rather be a french person or an American cat? If you had to be a plate of food and to be eaten by one person alive or dead, what food would you be and who would eat you?

I also think about this video a lot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JANGFLIYH0o

and this place http://www.theverge.com/2014/5/2/5674448/nagoro-japanese-doll-village-photos-video
On a typical Friday night I am
...probably drinking with friends and then going out dancing at some East Side bar or club. Or going to a house party. Or cooking and watching a movie. Or all of the above.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I talk to my cat in funny voices.
You should message me if
you can relate to this and try to avoid it whenever possible
