My self-summary
I'm passionate about being passionate. People make my world go round. I make a point to surround myself with good people doing good things, I try to meet as many of them as possible. I aim for a positive but also pragmatic outlook on life. I love conversation -- both witty banter and "pub talk" but also longform heart to hearts.

I'm interested in things. Music is my radar. I've got a head full of quandary and a mighty, mighty thirst.

I am big-hearted, soulful, and weird. Weird's a feature, not a bug! Mostly, I'm enthusiastic about life and all the amazing things in this world that make it worth living to its fullest. Come have adventures with me!
What I’m doing with my life
I work for a non-profit doing database + applications programming. I'm great at what I do and I have a fierce work ethic, but mostly it pays the bills so I can do what I love to do in my own time. Music is my life's passion! Listening to it, discussing / debating it, going to as many shows as I can every year, writing about it, sharing it, constantly seeking out new sounds. It's about the tunes and the community. Writing, travel and photography also feed my soul. A perfect weekend generally involves waking up with coffee & records on the turntable; exploring the city, taking a bunch of photos, checking out a new restaurant and a brewpub with close friends, an invigorating workout.
I’m really good at
Listening; problem solving; language; research; writing/editing; being empathetic; exploring.
The first things people usually notice about me
My enthusiasm; the way I kind of walk on my tip-toes; weird badges on my jacket/man bag.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: Douglas Adams, George Orwell, Nick Hornby, Kurt Vonnegut, The New York Times, "Great Apes", Irvine Welsh, "Dodger Dogs To Fenway Franks", "The Buddha of Suburbia", "Wonder Boys", the Cambridge Encyclopedias of English and of Language, lots of other nonfiction, especially stuff about foreign cultures, linguistics, architecture, and cities. Webcomics collections and graphic novels, too. "Calvin and Hobbes" is forever perfect, and James Kochalka's "American Elf" series stands as a testament to the inherent beauty & joy of the rhythm of life. Even the bad days.

Movies: All things Noah Baumbach. Woody Allen is a questionable human being but I love "Annie Hall" and "Manhattan" and a lot of his other films. "The Shawshank Redemption", "Monty Python's The Meaning Of Life", "High Fidelity", "Wonder Boys," "Rushmore", "Trainspotting", "American Beauty", "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", "Lost In Translation", "Back To The Future", "Clerks".

TV Shows: For better or for worse, I can quote most of the first 9 or 10 seasons of The Simpsons. Seinfeld. British comedy! Monty Python, Spaced, The Young Ones, Black Books, Father Ted, and on and on. The Office. Mad Men. Star Trek (Deep Space Nine is my fave). The State. Firefly. SNL. Anthony Bourdain's shows. Freaks & Geeks. Undeclared. Futurama. Roseanne. Quantum Leap. 30 Rock. Flight of the Conchords. Bob's Burgers. The Last Man On Earth. Law & Order. Dun dun.

Music: Marillion, The Smiths, Neko Case, Wilco, Uncle Tupelo, Joni Mitchell, David Bowie, The National, Vampire Weekend, Matthew Good, R.E.M., Idlewild, James, The Clash, Best Coast, Paul Simon, The Beatles, Pet Shop Boys, The Hold Steady, Ryan Adams, Chvrches, Elton John, Manic Street Preachers, Pulp, Freedy Johnston, Blur, Northern soul, Trash Can Sinatras, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, The Church, Peter Gabriel, Arcade Fire, The Jam, Talk Talk, all things Neil Finn, Radiohead, The Blue Nile, Rush, Pixies, The Who, They Might Be Giants, Ben Folds, Elvis Costello, Nada Surf, Josh Rouse, Billy Joel, Green Day, Toad The Wet Sprocket, Mark Kozelek is an asshole but I dig his art, Tom Petty, Elbow, Belle And Sebastian, M83, Brazilian music, Gram Parsons, Jens Lekman, The Gaslight Anthem, and so many more it'll make your head spin.

Food: Vegetarian. Tacos! Indian (nothing like a properly radioactive curry). Falafel, hummus, and pitas. Ethiopian. Chicago style veggie dogs. Vietnamese. A well crafted veggie burger. Humboldt Fog cheese is possibly the most amazing foodstuff on the planet.
The six things I could never do without
My iPhone. Cardinals baseball and English / European soccer (football). Good beer. My family and close friends. My iTunes library (all nearly 40,000 songs of it). Opportunities to learn and improve.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Music. Travel. Language. Interpersonal communication. How a great deal of the world's problems could be solved with a liberal application of empathy, logic and common sense.
On a typical Friday night I am
I'm most likely to be sprawled out at home with a quality pint of beer and a stack of records on the turntable. Although some weeks I head out to meet friends for beers and convo or a concert. I tend to dig a quieter Friday night to recover from the working week, and to have a proper night out on Saturday. But it's not a hard & fast rule -- some Friday nights I just need to out and about to be with my city and my people.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
My life is a constant battle to outwit my own overthinking brain.
You should message me if
If you like that I have all of the words. If you believe that anything can be an adventure and you'd like to come adventuring with me. If you're the kind of person who wants to get at, celebrate and share the marrow of life.
