I love to snorkel. I love almost anything involving a beach, as long as the beach is right next to an ocean. A beach at a lake is just some sand next to, well, a lake.
I was meant to live in the Keys, I think. I'm still not over the fact that I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and am not a citizen of the Conch Republic. I tried to make up for this lack by having a margarita at Margaritaville in Key West. Seriously, mine are better.
I'm also really good at singing loudly and enthusiastically when friends take me out to a karaoke bar. Note how I did not claim to be good. As with everything else, enthusiasm counts for at least as much as actual ability. Unless you're a doctor. I'm just saying.
I'm really good at being happy and positive and so are those closest to me. I plan on waking up each morning knowing that the day will most likely be the best day of my life. I believe that every day should be that kind of day. If you do, too, then we'll have something to talk about.
Oh, and I also make the second-best biscuits in the country. My grandma was from Alabama, and hers were the best. My fried chicken isn't nearly as good as hers, but my sweet tea is great, and my Hurricanes can make a strong man weep. In fact, some did this past summer, at least the next morning.
People, even strangers, always stop me to tell me what a big and contagious smile I have, and when I laugh, people come up to me to see what there is to laugh about. I love that, not having a shy or quiet laugh. In a way, though, that's sort of sad, beings as there is just so much to laugh about in this world. When I write, I always make fun of myself- partly because I really am that funny, but partly because jokes at the expense of others are usually really not all that funny. In other words, laugh at me, not with me.
People notice my curls, my curves, and when I'm working out, the serious look on my face. No idea what that's about, but apparently I look like I take fitness seriously, which I do.
I recently read 'The New Jim Crow' because of a fellow Cupider's recommendation, and it was a life-changing book for me. Tell me about a book which changed yours?
I love music. I think it's as vital to living as air or food. I listen to most kinds, from classical to country. At the risk of sounding like a cliche, my favourite composer is Beethoven, whose music always reveals a new and fascinating bit every time I listen to it. I coudn't begin to list all my favourites, but here's just a tiny taste: Prince, Stevie Ray Vaughan,Ray Charles, Bela Fleck, Jimmy Buffet, Bob Marley, India Arie, any of Rachmaninoff's piano music, Verdi,Garth Brooks, Immortal Technique, Jill Scott,Willie Nelson, Darius Rucker, Tupac, Mark Cohen, Parliament and Bonnie Raitt. And I haven't even gotten started on the blues musicians- blues is my favourite genre if I have to choose just one. But really, I love almost all music and couldn't imagine a life without it.
I enjoy art museums and have some favourite artists, but I really don't know enough to have a huge list. One of my favourites is Dale Chihuly. I also love Mark Rothko, but I've resigned myself to getting that horrified stare when I say so. I won't hold it against you if you roll your eyes at that choice as long as you don't make gagging sounds. I hate gagging sounds.
I love to cook, and to eat out occasionally. When I do go out, my favourites, in no particular order, are Greek,Vietnamese and Indian. I love southern cooking even though I don't indulge very often. If I am in the mood for a good steak, it had better be rare.
I like movies but you probably know more about them than I do. Some of my all-time favourites are 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon', 'Sideways', 'Being There', 'The Princess Bride'and 'Little Miss Sunshine'. I will watch 'Love, Actually' at least four times a year and I cry at the same places every single time. I'll watch Chow-Yun Fat in almost anything, and the same goes for Johnny Depp. Daniel Craig is probably the only celebrity who can make me drool uncontrollably.Ok, and The Rock. If you invite me to watch a James Bond movie, you'd better not say 'Pierce Brosnan' or 'Roger Moore' in the same breath.
My other passion is urban farming and eliminating food deserts in inner cities. If you know who Will Allen and Ron Finley are, we should talk.
