My self-summary
Photographer, pilot, sailor, geek. Jack of all trades and master of several.

I'm a lovable misanthrope, and loyal and honest to a fault. If I had a spirit animal, it would be Grumpycat. Pusheen is a close second.
What I’m doing with my life
Taking over the world.

For cash, working for a [not-]small social media company you've heard of, doing backend infrastructure production engineering, as far away from the pointy end as I can get. Before that, for a decade or so the day job mostly involved saving the world from bioterrorism (no, really), mixed with some other conslutting.

For love, trying to make progress towards some life goals. Top of the stack is currently 'sail around the world'; current phase is 'find and buy the right boat and a place to moor it'. So if you know any liveaboard catamaran moorage near Westlake, let me know. And if you want my impassioned speech on why catamarans are the best, let me know that too. :)

To make the world a better place, right now I mostly volunteer helping to run an insanely busy airport just north of Gerlach, NV. In the past I've done search and rescue, amateur radio emergency services, and built disaster preparedness systems.

There's a bunch of future life goals after this one -- combined MD/PhD program, flying myself around the world, learning mountain climbing -- but I'm working on leaving those for future-David.

And across everything I do I try to spend as much time as I can teaching -- everything from sailing to radiochemistry to computers.
I’m really good at
Fixing things. Breaking things. Taking things apart. Putting things together. Taking care of people. Making things. Doing a week's worth of work in an hour. Doing only an hour's worth of work all week.
The first things people usually notice about me
...I have no idea. Let me know next time you see me.

Morgan, Neal Stephenson, Douglas Adams, Isaac Asimov, Frederick Pohl, Poul Anderson, Allen Steele, Richard Paul Russo, Joe Haldeman, Timothy Zahn, Tom Robbins, Terry Pratchett, Charles Stross, Stanisław Lem. Favorite movies: Lola Rennt, Léon, Clerks, Real Genius, Sneakers, The Big Lebowski, Almost Famous, The Hudsucker Proxy, Resident Evil [the first one is great; the next three are increasingly terrible], Clerks 2, The Matrix, Fight Club, The Bourne Identity. Best movie ever made: The World's Fastest Indian.

Music: WOXY, KNDD, or

Food: I'll eat anything that doesn't eat me first (and most things that do), but I love Italian, Thai, and Chinese (but haven't been able to replace my favorite Chinese place since they closed years ago). And I'm enjoying sushi more and more as time goes on. And if you'd told me a year ago that I'd now consider steak (rare) & eggs (fried) the food of the gods, I'd've told you you were nuts. As you might have guessed I am very much not vegetarian / vegan, but most of my friends and nearly everyone I've ever dated are...
Six things I could never do without
I spend a lot of time thinking about
On a typical Friday night I am
... atypical.

Sleeping. Trying to sleep and failing miserably. Running around in the dark taking photographs of how beautiful things are at times most people never see them. Working madly because I have a deadline. At a quiet bar with friends. Or none of the above.

I've never been big on the club / show scene, but I'll try anything twice.

I'm a member at the Mercury, and a founding member of the CSPC, but I never manage to go to either.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Even though I'm a grammar snob, I still not-at-all-secretly love lolcats.

Also, I will judge you if your profile photos are out-of-focus.
You should message me if hate pants as much as I do.

... or if you have something to say.

... or if you want to play SCRABBLE™.
