My self-summary
This profile is tremendously out of date. But I don't have time to rewrite it right now. So caveat emptor.

Photographer, pilot, sailor, geek. Jack of all trades and master of several.

I've been called a lovable misanthrope more than once. I'm loyal and honest to a fault.

I'm looking for Miss Right; have you seen her? She's about yea tall, brain the size of a planet, and wearing a cute skirt. The 'yea tall' bit is optional.
What I’m doing with my life
Taking over the world.

For the last decade or so my day job has mostly involved saving the world from bioterrorism (no, really), but these days I work as a systems engineer (though my overlords call it something else).

In my copious free time, I do search and rescue, amateur radio emergency services, and build disaster preparedness systems. And I spend a lot of time teaching -- everything from sailing to radiochemistry.

I'm probably going to go to med school (actually, MSTP) sometime late this decade, and I plan to be a test pilot when I grow up.
I’m really good at
Fixing things. Breaking things. Taking things apart. Putting things together. Taking care of people. Making things. Doing a week's worth of work in an hour. Doing only an hour's worth of work all week.
The first things people usually notice about me
...I have no idea. Let me know next time you see me.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Too many to list, but here's a few:

Favorite authors: Larry Niven, Steven Barnes, Kristine Smith, Susan R. Matthews, Richard K. Morgan, Neal Stephenson, Douglas Adams, Isaac Asimov, Frederick Pohl, Poul Anderson, Allen Steele, Richard Paul Russo, Joe Haldeman, Timothy Zahn, Tom Robbins, Terry Pratchett, Charles Stross, Stanisław Lem. Or see

Favorite movies: Lola Rennt, Léon, Clerks, Real Genius, Sneakers, The Big Lebowski, Almost Famous, The Hudsucker Proxy, Resident Evil [the first one is great; the next three are increasingly terrible], Clerks 2, The Matrix, Fight Club, The Bourne Identity. Best movie ever made: The World's Fastest Indian.

Music: WOXY, KNDD, or

Food: I'll eat anything that doesn't eat me first (and most things that do), but I love Italian, Thai, and Chinese (but haven't been able to replace my favorite Chinese place since they closed years ago). And I'm enjoying sushi more and more as time goes on. And if you'd told me a year ago that I'd now consider steak (rare) & eggs (fried) the food of the gods, I'd've told you you were nuts. As you might have guessed I am very much not vegetarian / vegan, but most of my friends and nearly everyone I've ever dated are...
The six things I could never do without
I spend a lot of time thinking about
On a typical Friday night I am
... atypical.

Sleeping. Trying to sleep and failing miserably. Running around in the dark taking photographs of how beautiful things are at times most people never see them. Working madly because I have a deadline. At a quiet bar with friends. Or none of the above.

I've never been big on the club / show scene, but I'll try anything twice. And I am a member at the Mercury, so there's that. Not that I can remember the last time I went.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Even though I'm a grammar snob, I still not-at-all-secretly love lolcats.

And I'm a little bit offended that OKC thinks I'm 'less artistic'.

Also, I will judge you if your profile photos are out-of-focus.
You should message me if
You believe in reality, not woo.
You believe in love.
You're childfree and dogfree.
And you have something to say.

Or if you want to play SCRABBLE™.

Also, I am a terrible correspondent these days. I assure you it's not personal. (If it is, I assure you you'll know.)
