What will you do?
I greet you with some barley tea and a slice of pumpkin pie.
Howdy, I'm Alex, and I was born and raised in New York. Grew up in Long Island, lived in the city at NYU, and am now throwing it down in Brooklyn studying public interest law, hoping to end up at a not-for-profit. I absolutely love New York in all of its grittiness, electricity, and romanticism. I am the proud son of immigrants, respek. East meets west. Billy Joel meets De La Soul. Single and ready to mingle. Sorry, couldn't resist. Myers-Briggs told me I was NSFW. Go figure.
I'm a cocktail of opposites: Calm, cool, and collected on the outside. Passionate, indignant, and driven on the inside. I value creativity and artistry as much as I do intelligence and thoughtfulness. I am hopeful and optimistic about the world and the human spirit in the long term, but am a healthy skeptic in the short run. I am serious about my ambitions and dreams, but also value holding onto the wonder, curiosity, and silliness of the child in me.
Laughter is a vitamin that I try to take daily to stay sane. I love Spongebob Squarepants because it reminds me of my 90's childhood days of Doug, Salute Your Shorts, and Dexter's Laboratory.
I consider myself a contrarian in many ways, and I appreciate all forms of art, culture, philosophy, and activism that go against the grain and boldly forge new paths. Thinking outside the box, dreaming big, shaking the status quo-- these are activities that keep me stimulated. I am inspired the most by artists, entrepreneurs, thinkers, freedom fighters, and iconoclasts.
Here are some, to name a few:
Martin Luther King, Jr., Carl Sagan, George Carlin, Freddie Mercury, Noam Chomsky, John Cage, David Attenborough, Salvador Dalí, Aun San Suu Kyi, Bill Hicks, Julian Assange, Tom Morello, Mahatma Gandhi, The Amazing Randi, Ai Weiwei, De La Vega, Vandana Shiva, Fred Rogers, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Muhammad Yunus, Howard Zinn, Jim Henson, Arundhati Roy, Shigeru Miyamoto, Afrika Bambaataa, Naomi Klein, Cesar Chavez... (I'd love to hear yours!)
If these people and the ideas they represent mean as much to you as they do to me, we will definitely hit it off. Normally I don't like to define myself by other people, but I'll do it here. Plus, it keeps me feeling young; young enough to look up to amazing human beings with starry eyes and think to myself, "some day when I grow up, I wanna be like them! :D"
Music is one of my biggest passions, both as a listener and an aspiring musician. I did the high school musical and show choir bit, started an a cappella group at NYU, and am now recording a top secret music project! Singing and playing guitar are my main focuses, and I can also do what needs to be done with piano, drums, bass, and whatnot for songwriting.
I raised myself on indie/alternative rock (Muse, Radiohead, The Flaming Lips, RATM, The Mars Volta, Tool, NIN, Nirvana, Weezer, Blur, Sonic Youth, Arcade Fire, The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol, The White Stripes, The Libertines, Franz Ferdinand, much more) and classic rock (Queen, Led Zep, The Doors, Cream, Hendrix, The Beatles, ELO...). SRV is my personal guitar jesus. My world was turned upside-down when I got into good hip hop and it's a huge part of me (Lupe Fiasco, Jurassic 5, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, MF DOOM, Cunninlynguists, Immortal Tech, Public Enemy, Nujabes...). I'm also a huge fan of jazz (Davis, Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Wes Montgomery, Art Tatum, Django Reinhardt,...) and I loves me some Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye soulfulness and James Brown funk. Classical and orchestral is a neverending journey-- big into Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Debussy, Liszt, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, Messiaen, Scriabin, Satie, Schoenberg, Cage, anything really expressive and romantic or atonal/dissonant does it for me. Also into Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Latin music from across the world. New wave, ska, punk, post-punk, (Duran Duran, New Order, The Cure, Catch 22, The Stooges, much more) tons more to mention and talk about, so let's talk! My favorite singers to sing along to are Matt Bellamy, Thom Yorke, Rufus Wainwright, Jeff Buckley, Jimmy Gnecco, Frank Sinatra/Sammy Davis Jr./Dean Martin, Julian Casablancas, and Billy Joel, so expect lots of those if we go to karaoke. ALSO: stop the hatin' on country y'all.
I have a big geek side to me and love science fiction, video games, board games, cult films, comic books, webcomics, Internet culture, Japanese animation, futurism, robotics, green technology, and all that good stuff.
These are a few of my faavorite thiiings:
Firefly, Settlers of Catan, Hayao Miyazaki, Alan Moore, xkcd, Boing Boing, Final Fantasy, Donnie Darko, George Orwell, The Matrix, A Clockwork Orange, Cranium, Slaughterhouse-Five, The Onion, Fight Club, Homestar Runner, Akira, astronomy/space, Doctor Who, TEDTalks, Fahrenheit 451, cyber/steampunk, Tron, Scrabble, sketch/improv comedy & UCB/PIT, Philip K. Dick, The Princess Bride, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Why only orgasm when you can nerdgasm too, amirite?
My athletic passion is tennis, and I play and watch the sport avidly. I'm a huge fan of Djokovic, but I also love Rafa, Fed, Roddick, and Serena/Venus. I'm also a big fan of football (I hate calling it soccer) and love my FC Barcelona and Spanish national team La Furia Roja! And then there's the stereotypical New Yorker in me who was born and raised on the Yankees and who still roots for the Knicks post-Linsanity and despite living behind the new Nets stadium. Oh, I also bowl and shoot pool and will gladly accept if you are asking for a challenge!!
If you've read this far, admit it:
You're intrigued ;) Or incredibly bored :'(
Above you is a device that can send a message to Alex. To your left is an exit.
What will you do?
Artivism & social entrepreneurship.
Humanity and the pale blue dot we live on.
My science fiction novel.
How industrial designers should just do away with shiny because things look so much sexier matte. Especially matte black.
How the world would be so much better if breaking out into song and dance in public were socially acceptable and encouraged.
The power of language skills and improving my Spanish and Chinese to a point where I can use them professionally.
1. Creative - you engage in expression through music, writing, poetry, theater, fine arts, comedy or film, etc.
2. Socially conscious - you care deeply about social justice and the world around you, and are both aware and active in causes that involve human/civil rights, economic/racial equity, environmentalism, education, or public health, etc.
3. Geeky - you appreciate the imaginative, otherworldly, alternative, intriguing, cerebral, quirky, nerdy, comedic, underground, retro, obscure, absurd, surreal, and fantastical
You have a varied idea of a good time that includes loud rock shows, mellow jazz clubs, speaker panels, museum & art exhibits, improv comedy shows, poetry open mics, dim pool halls, film/documentary screenings, park picnics, gastropubs, broadway shows, aimless wanderings, protests, people watching, bike rides, game nights, exploration of both the dingiest and finest aspects of the city, and philosophizing with some wine while stargazing on a rooftop. Also, at the moment I literally live down the street from BAM, so holler if you want to get tix and see something.
