My self-summary
Fun, caring, affectionate, smart (well, more often than not) and capable of being deliciously silly, a mix of wise and wise guy.

The "playful" in my name refers both to an attitude and profession, as I write plays (mostly comedies, mostly produced). They've been produced all around the world and, occasionally, even New York (usually Off-Off-Broadway).

Born and raised in Chicago, I've been an Upper West Sider for about 20 years. Raised relatively Jewish, I'm now a mix of Jewish-Buddhist-pantheist-atheist-hedonist-humanist. I like the concept of "soul".

I swim regularly, walk zestfully, and travel enthusiastically. I've hung out with penguins in Antarctica, wandered side streets in Transylvania, waded through flooded roads in Vietnam, been to Burning Man five times, and I can also appreciate a quiet night at home with someone special. I love exploring both inner and outer worlds, and I like company as I do it.
What I’m doing with my life
Expanding it, exploring it, and sometimes treating it like Silly Putty.

Writing fills me with delight. I'm often surprised by what my characters say and think - I'D never think such things. I work damn hard, but I try to balance that with having fun (an often underappreciated concept) and simple pleasures like hanging out with good friends and feeling gratitude for all that I already have.

Oh, and occasionally I like to play with my hair color. Usually I'm my natural brunette, but I've been blonde, blue, purple and various mixes. It's fun to shake things up every now and then.
I’m really good at
...thinking outside the box or ignoring the box completely
...being able to say "You've got a point" even in the middle of a fight
...maneuvering a wide range in the naughty-to-nice continuum
...taking life seriously and not taking it seriously simultaneously
(I embrace paradox, and if it embraces me back, I let the hug linger)
The first things people usually notice about me
"Hey, he looks pretty good for 59", which I take as a great compliment, as I'm actually 63.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Eclectic tastes in all: My taste in theater includes both avant-garde and Broadway musicals. My taste in food encompasses the globe. I love cultural events where you're not sure what you're getting into but that's part of their attraction so what the hell let's check it out. My sense of curiosity and wonder has led me to Albanian pop concerts, a fun variety of parties, and ordering stuff on the menu that I hope is actually edible.
The six things I could never do without
a sense of humor
a place to go swimming
food and water, or at least dark chocolate and scotch
I spend a lot of time thinking about
- The new play ideas swirling in my head
- The Human Being: What the Hell's Going on Here?
- What does my soul need, and am I listening to it enough?
- The Human Being: Like Really, What the Hell's Going on Here?
On a typical Friday night I am
seeing a play (ranging from Broadway to wayyyyyyy Off-Off Broadway), having dinner with a friend (I love exploring new restaurants), occasionally dancing my ass off (why else have an ass?), and/or - when possible - kissing someone I find irresistible.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
There is a part of me constantly stunned that people appreciate, respect, admire and/or like me. Despite my generally good self-esteem, I don't expect it. I've accomplished what I've accomplished not because I'm confident, but because I've learned not to listen to my fears.
You should message me if
I'm looking for someone with joie de vivre and an adventurous spirit, preferably with at least a touch of goofball. I like intelligence; it's fun to have conversations with someone who surprises me with her outlook and insight. A kind heart is good; I think life can be challenging, and at times people aren’t up to the challenge. It'd be nice if your perception of reality at least roughly correlates with reality. As far as looks go, the women with whom I've been involved have varied significantly in height, shape, hair color and, well, everything, but they each have had a disarming smile.
