My self-summary
Welcome, and thanks for visiting!
Spring, Forward! I am a warm, and loyal and intelligent soul, and with a good sense of the humors. A curious mind (take that as you will), l find People interesting and I like art, both in and out of museums, since art is where you look for it. And so thusly I enjoy roaming the City, people & tableaux watching and all the other usuals - the rain, the parks, the other things: the flora, the fauna, the flora-dora. Or you can park me at home for some Scrabble, some PBS, a book, a map and a candle. I've always had a clutch of old, good friends, starting with family. I know when to be breezy, like here, and damn well when to be damn well serious. Capable of starry-eye devotion, but not at the drop of a hat. Nevertheless, bring a hat.
What I’m doing with my life
At the moment, I am working hard at filling out this form. Otherwise I wander wind-swept dunes whilst thinking about love and Visine™. And, sometimes, once in a while, cats. (I don't have a cat. I'm a one-cat man and I haven't found the right one.) Like a lot of people, I'm working on finding work (see how I snuck that in at the end and lumped myself into the crowd to avoid notice!?.) SO, yes, I'm one of the 99%, and the 8.3% and the 17.4%. You may have noticed, it's going around. But I'm OK. I programmed computers for decades quite steadily and responsibly, but, alas, knew too much, made too much, got benefits too much, etc, thus I certainly don't think of myself as a 'freeloader' or whatever, if I may say. Meanwhile I read, write, walk, talk, draw, and, with the help of spell-check, persevere.
I’m really good at
Modesty. Oh, and listening, smiling, and putting a hand on my chin, furrowing my brows, and shifting my eyes back & forth so I look like I'm thinking seriously about something important. (Did you just try that now to see what I was talking about? Good!). I say what's on my mind. Of course the kind of stuff I'm writing here IS what's on my mind. I'm told I'm humorous, in a 'you had to be there' kind of way. Should I believe them? I am, after all, modest.
The first things people usually notice about me
How my eyes, wide & bright, are already listening to them. Also, maybe, that I'm not chewing gum.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books - The cursed web leads me astray. One link leads to another and away from as many books as I'd like. News, science, history, lit, etc etc. Some favorites, though, include:
Billy Bathgate (E.L. Doctorow), Growing Up(Russell Baker), Call it Sleep (Henry Roth), Main Street (Sinclair Lewis). The Bros Karamazov( Dostoyevsky). American biographies, largely within 20 years of 1900. Lately more drawn to fiction than ever.
Recently finished: "Something Happened" by Joseph Heller
Currently: "The Portrait of a Lady" by Henry Adams.

Movies - "North by Northwest" (somehow can see it over & over). "Duck Soup". "The Presidents Analyst" (look it up). "The Big Sleep". Welles:"Lady From Shanghai", "Touch of Evil", "The Stranger". "The Time Machine" (1960 - good corn). Grapes of Wrath. Foreign films I'm steered to. Any good story. Old animation (Fleischers!). (I gots the Tired of CGI Blues.)

Music - Beatles. Bob Dylan. (Yeah, I know, I know). John Prine, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith. (alt folk-country?). 20's & 30's jazz. Simon, Sullivan, Gilbert & Garfunkel, not necessarily in that order. Sometimes I fall asleep to 'light classical' (w/'sleep timer')...

Shows - Not many. I'm not immune to Mad Men, though. Antiques Road Show: objects d'art, their histories & creators histories, & family stories, etc etc. Guilty Pleasure: Doc Martin. Occasional episodes of Korean soaps. There's an endless supply in Queens. Culturally enlightening. PBS.

Food - Turkey burger, medium, w/mustard. Ham omelet. Actually, I eat and enjoy a reasonably wide variety. I'll try anything not too spicy and not too mushy or smelly, and enjoy it. But I'm not quite a 'foodie'.
Six things I could never do without
Friends and fambly.
Comfy walking shoes.
Pen (Pilot™ P-500 gel, black) & Paper.
Gosh…Soap? Clothing? Oxygen?
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global frying. the mystery of 'group identity'. The economic news (as opposed to the 'business news'), and the ever-popular "now what??"
On a typical Friday night I am
…with a friend or two mostly chit chatting, or similarly with family. Maybe half-watching a ballgame while reading, web surfing, and/or doodling (my 'meditation'). Of course I might be at a movie, museum, performance, or whatever. But, that's right, I'm not particularly a bar person or club or party person.
Best 2 out of 3?
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I don't think I'll know that until I'm talking to you on our 3rd date.
Well, OK, there's the job thing.
You should message me if
You’re a nice, bright person with kindness in her eyes, mixed right in there with a sparkle. An artistic sensibility, of one kind or another, might be nice. Someone who’d just like to meet a new, nice bright friendly guy over a coffee cup for a nice, bright, friendly, low-key, ‘how do you do?’ in a muzak-less bistro with Cleanliness Grade ‘B’ or better.

Thinking longer term? Maybe you’re a potential hand-holder with, perhaps (but not necessarily) a tad - but not a music video - of unconventionality. A Scrabble player who will let me take back a misspelled word (or would, if they did play Scrabble). Someone who will give me that sly, sideways, knowing smile when I'm doing it again, whatever that turns out to be.
