My self-summary
Two of my favourite interests are reading and drawing. That helps explain my interest in comics. I like most creative pursuits and people, I guess, and hope that you have that spark in you as well.
I also enjoy more physical pursuits, like sailing. Since I was a kid I have sailed locally, throughout the Mediterranean, across the Atlantic, through the Panama Canal, and up the coast of Mexico back home. So, yeah, I like travelling as well, including lengthy stays in Thailand and India.
Really love animals too, but alas, I am currently petless. Maybe you have a cat?
Well, that's me in a nutshell. A pretty mixed bag of nuts it is. Basically, I value an open mind, broad experience, and a sense of wonder.
"It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way." -Warren Ellis
What I’m doing with my life
Unlearning a lot of what I learned in a long academic life. I liked school a lot but now I realize, while I was busy studying, a lot of the really cool kids were hanging out in the smoking pit. I didn't appreciate them then as much as I do now.
Been working for awhile. Going to take some time off soon to travel and just enjoy. Drawing. Painting. Getting drunk and posting pictures of cats.
*Update* I am now "just enjoying". Staying in a cabin on the sunshine coast, trying to figure out how to make it work here. Make it back to town about once a month.
I’m really good at
My friend Goob, says I'm really good at doing anything she wants me to do for her. Like, "I hear you're really good at giving massages!", or "I hear you're really good at getting me a drink!"
There is actually some truth to both of these.
The first things people usually notice about me
The odd grey hair. Something I'm wearing. My ever-changing facial/ hair style.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I was reading a lot of vintage crime noir and comics (Dashiell Hammet, Jim Thompson, Ed Brubaker) through the summer but now I have decided to read what my current residence has to offer which includes a lot of early Margaret Atwood. It is probably about time. Favourite comic writers include Grant Morrison, Alan Moore, and Warren Ellis.
Sure, I like pretty much everything that Wes Anderson and Woody Allen put out, but it is impossible for me to deny the influence that both Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark have had on me. I actually think they are critically underrated. All these creators share a sense of wonder about the world which I love.
The musical landscape seems so vast, but constants for me are Sonic Youth, The Velvet Underground, Johnny Cash, Neil Young and Jack White. New favourites include Besnard Lakes, Grimes and Hannah Georgas. Currently, I am really enjoying the Buddy Holly cover album, Rave On. Artists include the Black Keys, Modest Mouse, Lou Reed and John Doe. Worth a listen.
Six things I could never do without
-comic books, radio, thrift stores, wool, sailing, and kissing. Maybe its just the season, but "wool" has now replaced "motorcycles".
I spend a lot of time thinking about
...things people have made. This could be a drawing, a painting, a song, a house, a quilt, a ring, a comic...
Also, could getting a cat replace my desire for a partner?
*Update* now I have the greatest dog in the world, still thinking about getting a cat and now realize neither will replace a partner. Need it all.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I pretty much copy and pasted my entire self-summary from my POF profile. If admitting that I also have a POF account isn't enough, I was a nude model for drawing classes for about 10 years. It remains my favourite job.
You should message me if
...anything screams, "Road Trip!", or suggests, coffee.
