My self-summary
Hello! I'm Taylor.

I'm a dude who likes to think, laugh, and fix things; often in that order. I love the Pacific Northwest, I cannot imagine a better place to live. I'm homies with the water and with the woods, we've spent a lot of time together.

Laughter is important to me. Luckily I laugh a lot because I think I'm really funny. My friends are also regularly hilarious.

I love dogs and cats that act like dogs.

I'm very liberal. I phonebanked for ref. 74 and enjoyed it and will probably do it again. I'm not looking for someone who shares my views, I don't care what your political opinions are just as long as you have them.

I'm a staunch skeptic. My favorite recently deceased person Christopher Hitchens guides me here: "What can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence."

I like adventures, though I'm often too distracted by my thoughts to see them. But when someone points one out I rarely say no. I spent two summers wildland firefighting after a friend told me I was good at chopping wood and should look into it. I signed up for the class the next day.

The best two weeks of my life were spent in a canoe on the Bowron Lake Chain, something I would love to do again.

I would strongly prefer someone who's into hiking/camping. I have all the gear, I just need you.
What I’m doing with my life
Professionally I'm a carpenter.

I used to hike and camp and kayak a lot, then all my hiking buddies moved away (and then I moved away) and I spent a whole lot less time roughing it. I began fixing that last year by taking up fly fishing. When it warms up again I'm going to start hiking and camping again in earnest. I love the city, but there's just something about pooping in the woods that appeals to me. I call it pooping with a view. Also fresh air and exercise and the transcendent stillness of a night sky replete with stars and whatever.
I’m really good at
Hugs. The secret is a combination of long arms and enthusiasm.

Lying to children.

I'm also kind of amazing at board games, but let's not make a big deal about it.

I almost forgot! I'm pretty good at ping pong too. I love ping pong because things happen too fast for me to think. This is as close to meditation as I get and I love it.
The first things people usually notice about me
I'm 6'4", which is hard to not notice.

I tend to joke a lot. Often when I'm not telling jokes I'm smirking because I'm thinking jokes.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: Hitch-22, Blindsight, Ender's Game, Where the Red Fern Grows, all the Calvin and Hobbes books, anything by Douglas Adams.

Movies: Super Troopers, Blackhawk Down, The Sandlot, Kill Bill, Dogma, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the original Star Wars trilogy, the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Shows: The Daily Show, Band of Brothers, 30 Rock, Breaking Bad, Undeclared, The Rachel Maddow Show. I don't watch much TV because I don't like most of it.

Shows that I watch with my ears: This American Life, Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!, The Skeptic's Guide to the Universe, Grammar Girl, The Moth.

Music: Chromeo, Royksopp, Macklemore, The Decemberists, The Head and the Heart, The Weepies, Kid Cudi, Soul Coughing, The Presidents of the United States of America, Of Montreal, Tom Waits, Modest Mouse, Lupe Fiasco, Regina Spektor, Frou Frou, Tom T Hall. And that's it. I hate all other bands.

Food: I love Asian food, but I think that's partially because I think chopsticks are fun. It would probably be faster to just list what I don't like. Mushrooms, Grapefruit (not grapefruit juice, I like that), and Insects. That's about all I can think of.

I love spicy food. Like, really really spicy food. Hot sauce did not make the list of 6 things I couldn't do without, but it was considered.
Six things I could never do without
Evergreens. I don't like to be away from them for too long.

A dictionary. I'm a logophile. Words are great and new words are better.

A good pair of speakers and/or headphones. Fidelity is important to me.

My library card. I use it a lot.

Sensible shoes. I think this explains itself.

An important question I don't know the answer to, preferably concerning a topic which can be discussed deep into the night. Luckily these are not in short supply.

Friends and family only didn't make the list because they are an uninteresting answer. I do love my friends and family.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
What a curse t is to be so damned intelligent and good looking.

Because I thoroughly enjoy a good debate, I spend a lot of time parsing and scrutinizing arguments I've made or heard to make sure they contain no flaws in logic or scope.
On a typical Friday night I am
Looking for a bar where I can hear myself think. Or sometimes I'm reading alone. Occasionally I can be found yelling at my friends for sucking at video games. I've also been known to smoke a bit and engage in long, meandering conversations about the subjective nature of reality, the importance of the oxford comma, and my favorites scenes from A Goofy Movie.

I guess what I'm saying is I don't really have a typical Friday night.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Old Yeller makes me cry every time.
You should message me if
You have an awesome word that I should know. I'll go first.

Nepenthe: that which induces pleasure to make you forget sorrow or pain, especially a drug or drink.

Beer is my favorite nepenthe.
